Writers, Why Writers Conferences? | MarlaMiller.com

I love cyberspace and the ability to do business easily. But for writers, there?s no place like home (s) we visit annually, come hell or high water: writers conferences. Why go? Conferences offer avenues into the community of writers. The same folks who will help you when your book is published are the folks whose cards and emails you should be collecting every time you attend one. This is just one reason to go.

I?m lucky. I workshop at conferences so I get to go free and sometimes, I?m even paid.

But if I wasn?t, I still would be attending one or more each year, as I did for many years before I became a workshop leader. I?d stop myself from buying shoes I love but don?t need. If going to a conference meant rationing my Starbucks fixes, I gladly would reduce my caffeine intake to attend one conference per year. That?s how important they are to this writer?s life.

The Southern California Writers Conference is revving up for its annual fall SCWC held in Newport Beach. I will be there teaching a workshop or two and grateful for the opportunity. At SCWC?s 2013 winter conference, we listened to best selling author (and Ray Bradbury protege) David Brin offer his take on the digital age; a video soundbite I captured and added to my site. In just a few words, Brin sums up his concern with digital publishing: lack of quality control.?This kind of valuable perspective offered by ?our elders? in the business (whether chronically older or not) at writers conferences is one more reason to go. Established, successful authors deliver advice specifically aimed at the audience there to hear them speak specifically about the art form, the craft and the business of writing. Those who have put time into this craft, enough to be rewarded handsomely by traditional publishing, have lots to offer us writers traveling along our own publishing paths.

Another reason to go: understanding just how difficult it is to write compelling prose. In today?s indie publishing movement, some writers are in too big of a hurry to see their names on book jackets. When I hear an indie writer say it took one year to write the novel s/he just published, I pretty much know the novel?s not going to hook me.

Novels need time to brew, steep, ferment. Novels need rewriting, many rewrites. Novels need readers, many readers willing to tell the writer what their mothers won?t-go back to your writing place because this version sucks. Listen to Perks of Being A Wallflower author/screenwriter/director ?Stephen Chbosky discuss the process of writing this bestselling novel with editor Marianne Dougherty at 2013 SBWC. Writers need to hear just how hard this craft is to master and we need to hear this from the masters of our craft.

I?ve often heard the best among us say how much they love speaking to writers at conferences. ?Why? We get them and they get us. Listen to David Brin and Stephen Chbosky?s tone as they address a room filled with writers. They are specific because they know we understand their language. You won?t hear noted authors speak with this specificity to the general public. Another reason to save up your money and go.

No matter how many webinars I participate in or how many online TV/radio shows I host, there?s no place like a writer?s conference for this writer to feel right at home.

SCWC commences on Sept 20-22 in Newport Beach, Ca. Early Bird discounts are available and feel free to mention MarlaMiller.com when you register.

    It can?t hurt. ?

Charlie Wilson takes Essence Festival to church with a little old school and a little new school R&B

If there's one thing Charlie Wilson knows how to do, it's entertain a crowd. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome was rocking for another of Wilson's return performances at Essence Festival this year, and he continues to defy the odds and prove that he's just as relatable to the new school as the old.

Wilson spent the majority of his career as the lead vocalist with R&B and funk group The Gap Band and recently accepted the 2013 BET Lifetime Achievement Award, but he's hardly out of touch with today's young listeners. Wilson has been featured on various tracks through the years, including Mystikal's "Ghetto Fabulous," and he put in serious time on Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and more recently, "Yeezus."

There was a touch of old school class in Wilson's band: two keytars, a backup vocalist, a saxophone, drums, and four dancing women. And it wouldn't be old school unless they all had at least one costume change, right?

Wilson opened by calling everyone aboard the soul train, taking Essence Festival right on into The Gap Band's 1982 hit "Early in the Morning," but they didn't stay in the 80s for long. Wilson introduced "My Baby" from this year's "Love, Charlie" and last year's "My Love Is All I Have."

Wilson took his first quick change during "Burn Rubber," but Wilson's disappearance was matched by a magnetic sax solo. The saxophonist took the liberty Wilson's momentary exit allowed, stretching his legs and using the length of the stage, albeit earning it.

Wilson reappeared alongside his similarly dressed backup dancers in light-up, Crayola-colored zoot suits.

"I just got a BET Lifetime Achievement Award? And how do I look?" Wilson asked, to cheers from the crowd.

The dancers handled a few more costume changes, appearing alongside Wilson for "I Think I'm in Love," "Charlie, Last Name Wilson" and "Turn Off the Lights." Again, during "There Goes My Baby," the sax carried the weight of Wilson quick change, and the R&B crooner reappeared in classy a white tux with black trim. A lucite piano soon appeared beside him onstage.

"I must be the most blessed guy in the world. Every time I ask God for something, he gives it right to me," Wilson said. "I want to thank him in person, in front of thousands of people."

Wilson sang his praise in the gospel tune, "If I Believe," and soon got even more personal with the crowd.

"I was lead singer of The Gap Band for 18 years. I went from rags to riches, then riches to rags ? because I was an alcoholic and a crack-cocaine addict," Wilson said. "I found somebody bigger than me who picked me up and put my feet on solid ground. ? We're about to have a bit of church up in here!"

Wilson jumped into "Outstanding" before indulging in a bit more audience interaction.

"I'm old school," Wilson said, "and I'm new school."

Jay-Z's 100th problem: Hackers busted his Android app

Musician Jay-Z at an event promoting his latest album, "Magna Carta ... Holy Grail."

In order to promote his latest album, "Magna Carta ... Holy Grail," musician Jay-Z partnered with Samsung to release an app exclusively to Galaxy smartphone owners. Since the app gives folks the opportunity to download the new album for free before it's even officially released July 8, it's understandable that those without Galaxy smartphones want to get their hands on it as well.

This gave some sneaky hackers an opportunity to cause trouble.

"McAfee Mobile Security has identified a new Android Trojan embedded in a pirated copy of an exclusive app from rapper Jay-Z," Irfan Asrar, a researcher for McAfee, writes in a post on the security software maker's blog.

While the malicious app looks and functions just like the legitimate app as far as a user might see, it quietly sends out information about the device it is installed on while also downloading and installing additional items.

"The only visible indication that a user is infected comes via a time-based trigger that [was] set to activate on July 4" Asrar explains. On that day, the wallpaper on devices which have downloaded the malicious version of the app was changed to an image of President Obama with a caption declaring "YES WE SCAN."

This image, along with the the name under which the malicious version of the app runs ("NSAListener"), suggests "a hacktivist agenda," Asrar says, but he doesn't rule out the posibility that "additional malware may target financial transactions or other data."

So what's the lesson here? It's pretty simple: Be careful when it comes to downloading apps from places other than the Google Play store or other official app markets (such as Amazon's Appstore).
