Can a not for profit make a profit? ? Womack Consulting Group

Reprinted from?Inc.com

Nonprofit corporations, by definition, exist not to make money but to fulfill one of the purposes recognized by federal law: charitable, educational, religious, scientific or literary activities. Under federal tax law and state corporate statutes, however, as long as a nonprofit corporation is organized and operated for a recognized nonprofit purpose, it can take in more money than it expends in conducting its activities. In other words, it can make a profit.

Making a Profit From Related Activities
Let?s take as an example a group called Friends of the Library Inc. It?s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (that means it has a federal tax exemption) organized to encourage literary appreciation in the community and to raise money for the support and improvement of the public library. It can make a profit from its lecture series featuring famous authors and from its annual sale of donated books.

Because these activities are educational, they do not jeopardize the group?s tax-exempt status. It may use its tax-free profits for its own operating expenses (including salaries for officers and staff) or for the benefit of the library. What it cannot do is distribute any of the profits for the benefit of officers, directors or employees connected with Friends of the Library ? as dividends, for example.

Unrelated Business Activities
Nonprofits can also make money in ways that aren?t related to their nonprofit purposes. Such unrelated business income is permissible and often essential to the survival of nonprofit organizations. But it is subject to taxation, under state and federal corporate tax rules.

It?s best not to let unrelated business activities reach the point where the group starts to look like a regular commercial business. Unrelated business activities shouldn?t absorb a substantial amount of staff time, require additional paid staff or volunteers to run them, or produce much more income than your exempt-purpose activities and services generate.

For example, say that many thousands of books are donated to Friends of the Library for its annual book sale, one of its major fund raising events. Although the sale is always highly successful, thousands of books are left over, and Friends decides to sell the more valuable ones by advertising in the rare and out-of-print books classified sections in various magazines.

The response is overwhelming, and soon there are six employees cataloging books. In addition, Friends begins a business buying books from other dealers and reselling them to the public. Such a situation could attract attention from the IRS and prompt it to reconsider Friends? 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

Finally, although it?s not typical for the average group, a nonprofit corporation may make money from ? passive? sources such as rents, royalties, interest and investments. This income is non-taxable in some cases.

New Syria bloodshed tests UN peace plan

Renewed bloodshed in Syria on Thursday killed at least four people, putting to the test a hard-won ceasefire plan that was supposed to take effect at dawn.

The opposition said regime forces killed three civilians and arrested dozens more in defiance of its undertaking to peace envoy Kofi Annan to halt all military operations and withdraw troops from towns and cities.

State television said that "armed terrorists" -- its usual term for rebel fighters -- killed one loyalist soldier and wounded 24, and accused the opposition of deliberately setting out to wreck the truce.

Annan -- peacemaker for both the Arab League and United Nations -- was to give a 1330 GMT briefing by video conference to UN Security Council members on the two sides' compliance with his plan to end bloodshed that the world body estimates has killed more than 9,000 people since March 2011.

The opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) said the epicentre of Thursday's bloodshed was the flashpoint central region of Hama, long a focus of dissent to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

"We have visual proofs, videos and photos that heavy weapons are still in populated areas, sometimes they just have been relocated," said the council's foreign affairs chief, Basma Qoudmani, demanding that regime forces not only cease fire but withdraw from protest centres.

Qoudmani called for peaceful demonstrations across Syria to test the government's readiness to accept public shows of dissent.

"The real test will be if there is shooting or not when people demonstrate," she said.

State media charged that it was the opposition who were jeopardising the long-awaited truce, accusing rebel fighters of bombing a bus ferrying troops to their base in Syria's second-largest city Aleppo.

"An armed terrorist group used an explosive device to target a bus transporting officers and non-commissioned officers to their unit in Aleppo. It killed a lieutenant colonel and wounded 24 other people" at 8:00 am (0500 GMT), the official SANA news agency reported.

State television said the armed groups were "intensifying criminal operations in an attempt to destabilise Syria and torpedo the (Annan) plan" which went into effect at 6:00 am (0300 GMT).

Among Syria's allies, China welcomed the regime's decision to uphold a "comprehensive ceasefire" describing it as a step towards a political solution. Russia called for more time.

Just hours before the deadline expired, the military unleashed a lethal offensive against protest centres, killing 25 civilians on Wednesday, including 10 in the rebel stronghold of Rastan, Britain-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said.

"Its commitments therefore have little, if any, credibility ... given that track record," Rice said.

Annan's plan calls for the withdrawal of forces from urban areas, a halt to fighting, a daily two-hour humanitarian truce, the release of arbitrarily detained people, freedom of movement for journalists and the right to demonstrate.

The SNC said both it and the rebel Free Syrian Army, a ragtag force of mainly army defectors, were committed to the truce but also voiced doubts about the regime's commitment.

SNC chief Burhan Ghalioun called on people to demonstrate "because the right to demonstrate is a principle point of the plan of Annan."

He urged the international community to "monitor its implementation in full, mainly the right to demonstrate... and to provide the means to protect the people if the regime violates the plan."

"International observers should be on the ground as soon as possible," he said.

Ahead of the ceasefire, foreign ministers of the Group of Eight major industrial powers met in Washington for talks on Syria and other global crises, with both Britain and France pressing for monitors to verify any ceasefire.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called for the Security Council to seek a "robust observers force" that would verify compliance and "could move freely" without interference from Assad's regime.

Russia has been a leading supporter of Assad's regime, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would press Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over the conflict.

Lavrov said some Arab and Western states had written off Annan's peace plan as a failure even before it had gone into effect and called on them to use their influence with the rebels to avoid future unrest.

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Syria's commitment to the ceasefire "will help ease the tense situation in Syria, and is an important step towards a political solution."

Moscow, which along with China vetoed two Security Council resolutions that would have tightened the screws on Assad, has championed the Annan peace plan but also sought pressure against the Syrian opposition.

Western governments argue a ceasefire alone is not enough and that the Damascus regime must withdraw its troops from towns and cities.

Duck-billed dinosaurs endured long, dark polar winters

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Duck-billed dinosaurs that lived within Arctic latitudes approximately 70 million years ago likely endured long, dark polar winters instead of migrating to more southern latitudes, a recent study by researchers from the University of Cape Town, Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas and Temple University has found.

The researchers published their findings, "Hadrosaurs Were Perennial Polar Residents," in the April issue of the journal The Anatomical Record: Advances in Integrative Anatomy and Evolutionary Biology. The study was funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Anthony Fiorillo, a paleontologist at the Museum of Nature and Science, excavated Cretaceous Period fossils along Alaska's North Slope. Most of the bones belonged to Edmontosaurus, a duck-billed herbivore, but some others such as the horned dinosaur Pachyrhinosaurus were also found.

Fiorillo hypothesized that the microscopic structures of the dinosaurs' bones could show how they lived in polar regions. He enlisted the help of Allison Tumarkin-Deratzian, an assistant professor of earth and environmental science, who had both expertise and the facilities to create and analyze thin layers of the dinosaurs' bone microstructure.

Another researcher, Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a professor of zoology at the University of Cape Town, was independently pursuing the same analysis of Alaskan Edmontosaurus fossils. When the research groups discovered the similarities of their studies, they decided to collaborate and combine their data sets to provide a larger sampling. Half of the samples were tested and analyzed at Temple; the rest were done in South Africa.

"The bone microstructure of these dinosaurs is actually a record of how these animals were growing throughout their lives," said Tumarkin-Deratzian. "It is almost similar to looking at tree rings."

What the researchers found was bands of fast growth and slower growth that seemed to indicate a pattern.

"What we found was that periodically, throughout their life, these dinosaurs were switching how fast they were growing," said Tumarkin-Deratzian. "We interpreted this as potentially a seasonal pattern because we know in modern animals these types of shifts can be induced by changes in nutrition. But that shift is often driven by changes in seasonality."

The researchers questioned what was causing the dinosaurs to be under stress at certain times during the year: staying up in the polar region and dealing with reduced nutrition during the winter or migrating to and from lower latitudes during the winter.

They did bone microstructure analysis on similar duck-billed dinosaur fossils found in southern Alberta, Canada, but didn't see similar stress patterns, implying that those dinosaurs did not experience regular periodic seasonal stresses. "We had two sets of animals that were growing differently," said Tumarkin-Deratzian.

Since the Alaska fossils had all been preserved in the same sedimentary horizon, Fiorillo examined the geology of the bonebeds in Alaska where the samples were excavated and discovered that these dinosaurs had been preserved in flood deposits.

"They are very similar to modern flood deposits that happen in Alaska in the spring when you get spring melt water coming off the Brooks Mountain Range," said Fiorillo. "The rivers flood down the Northern Slope and animals get caught in these floods, particularly younger animals, which appear to be what happened to these dinosaurs.

"So we know they were there at the end of the dark winter period, because if they were migrating up from the lower latitudes, they wouldn't have been there during these floods," he said.

"It is fascinating to realize how much of information is locked in the bone microstructure of fossil bones," said Chinsamy-Turan. "It's incredible to realize that we can also tell from these 70 million-year-old bones that the majority of the polar hadrosaurs died just after the winter season."

(AP) ? An Egyptian court ruled Wednesday that that the mother of a popular ultraconservative Islamist viewed as one of the strongest contenders for president is not a U.S. citizen, likely clearing the way for him to run in May elections.

The decision was met with cheers of "God is great!" by thousands of Hazem Abu Ismail's supporters who had camped outside the court house in Cairo for hours, waiting for the decision.

Abu Ismail is a 50-year-old lawyer-turned-preacher with a large following of enthusiastic supporters, particularly from the country's ultraconservative Salafi movement.

The decision is likely to heat up an already intense presidential campaign for the May 23-24 elections ? the first freely contested presidential race in Egypt's history.

A law put in place after the fall of President Hosni Mubarak last year stipulates that a candidate may not have any other citizenship than Egyptian ? and that the candidate's spouse and parents cannot have any other citizenship as well.

The country's electoral commission said last week that it had received documents confirming that Ismail's mother was an American citizen, effectively disqualifying him from the race. The announcement sparked widespread protests by his supporters.

The prospects of Abu Ismail's return threatens to divide the votes of Islamists who have nominated a number of candidates.

Among the other contenders are Khairat el-Shater of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest political group, who represents a more mainstream face of the Islamist movement than does Abu Ismail.

Mubarak's ex-spy chief Omar Suleiman also joined the race in a surprise move on Friday, the last day of applications.

The Cairo Administrative Court ruled that the authorities must provide Abu Ismail with a document confirming that his mother has only Egyptian nationality.

Abu Ismail had challenged authorities to produce evidence backing their allegations. He had argued that if his mother held any citizenship other than Egyptian, authorities must have local records of her dual nationality. Lawyers said the papers presented by authorities were insufficient.

Many Egyptians who acquire another nationality fail to register with the government here and are hence not recognized by Egypt as dual nationals.

Abu Ismail had said that the case against him was a plot by authorities and foreign powers to disqualify him because of his increasing popularity.

The presidential elections commission is currently vetting documents of all applicants for the elections and is to announce a final list before the end of the month.

Other candidates are also facing legal challenges, including the Brotherhood's Khairat el-Shater. Plaintiffs have challenged el-Shater's candidacy on grounds he had served time in prison connected to his political activity under Mubarak. He received a pardon from military rulers but his challengers say more time must pass before he can run, according to the law.

Suleiman, the ex-spy chief, is facing a challenge from the Islamist-dominated parliament. Parliamentary committees have been discussing passing a law barring former Mubarak officials from running for office. Suleiman's bid for presidency has angered Islamists and revolutionary groups who say it was an offense to the 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak.

14 hrs.

We hope you're sitting down, because you'll need to be to in order to hold the Excite 13 in your hands. Starting at a steep $649 and available June 10th, this is the largest Android tablet yet, featuring a billboard-like 13-inch screen.

What's the point of being 3 inches bigger than the?iPad? Toshiba says this 2.2-pound device was designed primarily for home use, whether you're surfing the web, playing games, video chatting, or watching movies. Here are our first impressions of this Ice Cream Sandwich-powered beast.

This slate's huge display (1600 x 900 pixels) is sharper than your typical Android tablet but lower res than the new iPad's Retina Display (2048 x 1536) and full HD Android devices like the upcoming?Asus Eee Pad TF700T?(1900 x 1200). Nevertheless, there's plenty of real estate for two people to view content at the same time, which could help prevent the kids from fighting over the family tablet.

The Excite 13 packs a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor for quad-core power, a front-facing 2-MP camera and 5-MP back camera. Other features include a full-size SD Card slot, micro USB port for attaching peripherals and a micro HDMI port. The 32GB model costs $649, while the 64GB model will run you $749.

During our brief hands-on time, the Excite 13 was unwieldy to use unless we had it in our lap or on a table. It's simply too large to hold while you're standing. The big footprint also made reaching across the display with our thumbs to type almost impossible. However, we do appreciate this tablet's slim .4-inch profile and its textured back, which ensures a firm grip.

Our first instinct is to dismiss the Excite 13 as a ploy to get shoppers to stop in their tracks when they see it on the shelf. We'll have to wait and see whether the performance and large canvas make up for this slate's awkwardness. Stay tuned for a full review.

Tennessee enacts evolution, climate change law

Tennessee enacted a law Tuesday that critics contend allows public school teachers to challenge climate change and evolution in their classrooms without fear of sanction.

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam allowed the controversial measure to become law without his signature and, in a statement, expressed misgivings about it. Nevertheless, he ignored pleas from educators, parents and civil libertarians to veto the bill.

The law does not require the teaching of alternatives to scientific theories of evolution, climate change and "the chemical origins of life." Instead, it aims to prevent school administrators from reining in teachers who expound on alternative hypotheses to those topics.

The measure's primary sponsor, Republican state Sen. Bo Watson, said it was meant to give teachers the clarity and security to discuss alternative ideas to evolution and climate change that students may have picked up at home and want to explore in class.

"I am glad that the governor recognized that this bill does not do all of the things that its critics have alleged," Watson said Tuesday. "It does not change the state's science curriculum and it does not change how science is taught. Both of those assertions are red herrings."

The bill's critics, which include the Tennessee Science Teachers Assn. and the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, counter that teachers currently have no problem addressing unconventional ideas and challenges that students bring up. They argue, instead, that the measure gives legal cover to teachers to introduce pseudoscientific ideas.

In a statement to the Tennessean newspaper, Haslam said the measure would create confusion over the state's science standards.

"The bill received strong bipartisan support, passing the House and Senate by a 3-to-1 margin," he said. "But good legislation should bring clarity and not confusion. My concern is that this bill has not met this objective."

The law is likely to stoke growing concerns among teachers around the country that teaching climate science is becoming the same kind of classroom and community flash point as evolution. Tennessee is now the second state, after Louisiana, to allow the teaching of alternatives to accepted science on climate change.

"We respect Gov. Haslam for showing leadership in not signing this legislation," said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee. "But that doesn't change the fact that Tennessee now has a law on the books essentially granting permission for teachers to violate the 1st Amendment by introducing their own personal religious beliefs on the origin of life into the classroom."

Biologists say there is no scientific controversy over evolution, only a political one.

Wal-Mart previews 'Disc to Digital' movie service

A "Walmart Entertainment" stamp in indelible ink has been placed on a disc, preventing any further conversion, but allowing it to still be played, at a Wal-Mart store in Rosemead, Calif., Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Wal-Mart is set to unveil its "disc-to-digital" service for converting old DVDs into an online library that is available over the Internet. The fee it will charge per disc is meant to cover the cost of hosting and delivering reams of movie files to various devices. The world's largest retailer also aims to keep drawing customers to its big-box stores as their movie-watching habits change. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

ROSEMEAD, Calif. (AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. previewed its "Disc to Digital" service for converting DVDs into an online library on Wednesday. Based on my experience, I'd give it a six out of 10.

That's the number of discs I was able to convert from a completely unscientific sampling of my personal DVD library.

The new service allows movie fans to walk into any Walmart, where they can present their old DVDs and get permanent access to an online version of each movie that can be streamed from a home computer or a mobile device. The DVDs are stamped with a special ink to prevent further conversion. The DVDs, however, can still be played. Each DVD conversion costs as little as $2.

Three of my four failed conversions were no surprise ? two were obscure documentaries, and one was a film from The Walt Disney Co., which is not participating in the service. One was a bit puzzling: "Water for Elephants," a fairly successful romance released last year by 20th Century Fox, one of the studios that is partnering with Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart's category director for movies, Louis Greth, said the retailer hasn't yet cleared the rights for all the titles from participating studios. That will result in some titles not being available. Some actors and directors have not agreed to sign over digital rights to movies they took part in. In the case of director George Lucas, that includes all six "Star Wars" movies.

Fox confirmed that the digital rights for "Water for Elephants" have not been cleared.

Still, with 4,000 titles available for digital conversion when the service launches nationwide on Monday, the retailer hopes to give U.S. customers another reason to come into stores. Wal-Mart also wants to take part in the shift in the way people watch movies. More and more people are choosing to watch on portable devices like Apple's iPad, and allowing people to convert their DVD libraries is seen as an important bridge to a fully portable age.

Greth called the plan "the right first step" to ease consumers into owning movies online.

Five major studios are participating in the service, which gives consumers permanent access to their movies through Wal-Mart's Vudu online movie service.

Customers must bring in the physical discs themselves and an employee will search a database to see if they are available. For $5 per disc, movies can be upgraded from DVD to a high-definition online version. Blu-ray discs converted to HD will still cost $2 each. Each disc that gets converted gets stamped with indelible ink so it can't be reused by someone else.

Vudu can be accessed through computers, Internet-connected TVs, video game consoles and by way of a special player available on iPads and iPhones. Access requires a hard-wired Internet connection or Wi-Fi.

Participating studios include Viacom Inc.'s Paramount, Comcast Corp.'s Universal, Sony Corp., Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.

The Walt Disney Co. is developing its own online storage system called KeyChest, and is not involved in the Wal-Mart offer.

The service makes Wal-Mart part of the fledgling UltraViolet system for storing online movies. Several of the participating studios have begun to release new titles with the functionality, which allows purchased movies to be viewed through the Flixster online movie application. Fox has delayed introducing new titles on the UltraViolet standard until improvements are made.

Differences Between Adware ? Spyware And Viruses | Science ...

Virus Adware, spyware and computer share some similarities, one of which is that all three are major nuisances for computer users. Let?s differentiate the three.

Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer.

Spyware is designed to track and record the types of Web sites visited, and what you do in those sites. The objective of this type of software is to monitor web activity and learn your likes and dislikes so that advertisers can send e-mail and unwanted pop-ups.

How can you say that there is potential spyware software? Fairly easily. Have you ever downloaded a software during the installation process requires the OK to load a BHO (browser object or driving) or want to change what the homepage will be, or the default search engine? This is a potential spyware. The company offers free software to do it, because I want you to say ?OK? to have a third-party software also installed on your PC. If you download something like that ? no matter how tempting it is free software, stop the installation!

Spyware has a way of getting on your hard drive ? and stay there. It can often be very difficult to remove spyware from your PC. The best defense is a good offense: do not download spyware in the first place, is the best advice can be given. The second piece of advice ? buy a good monitor spyware that actually prevent the installation of rogue applications, or suspects.

Spyware also has a side indisious that the applications may also be a record of each keystroke. Visiting a secure banking Web site? If you have spyware on your PC may also be recording your login information.

Adware will not harm your computer, and is a legitimate form of freeware or free software.

Some companies provide free software that can disable certain functions, while others will give you a fully functional version of the software, but that show advertising during its use. Advertisements can be displayed in the header or footer and banner ads 468?60 Send typical. Or advertisements may be more profound with pop-up window is displayed when the program is running.

Why is it legitimate? The software developer does not deceive you to install any kind of monitoring tool. They are usually in advance and say that their application is supported by advertising. They also provide a method to remove the advertisement, which is usually the purchase of the software to pay moderate.

Although adware may be acceptable, you should still be cautious because you do not know if the application is the monitoring and reporting of user information the author of the software.

Viruses are destructive forms of software. They were designed and manufactured exclusively for one purpose alone: ??to wreck havoc to your computer. They destroy everything they come into contact and begin replicating itself and infect as many components of the computer operating system or network as possible.

Although viruses have the ability to physically damage computer components, you can erase the entire hard disk making it virtually impossible to always retrieve the data ? even if the disk were sent to data recovery experts.

The best way to prevent viruses is to purchase anti-virus software. Today most software includes anti-virus scanners look for spyware and adware. Then there is the need to purchase three separate tools. But to have an anti-virus is not sufficient, you must make sure that it is kept updated with the latest definition files. It ?s pointless to have an anti-virus that has not been updated in recent months. Most programs do automatic checks, and update in the background.

San Diego, CA, April 10, 2012 The neighborhoods in which children and adolescents live and spend their time play a role in whether or not they eat a healthy diet, get enough exercise or become obese, concludes a collection of studies in a special theme issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Each of the six studies uses the latest concepts and methods in geographic information systems (GIS)-based research to determine how the geographic location affects physical health. A study titled "Spatial Classification of Youth Physical Activity Patterns" shows, for example, that while rural youth get the largest proportion of their physical activity while at school, urban and suburban youth are most active when commuting. Not only does this finding suggest that the walk to school might be just as important to some children's health as is the physical education they receive as part of the school curriculum, it is also important given that adolescent health behaviors are predictive of behaviors in adults.

Another study by researchers in the United Kingdom concludes that adolescents in rural areas ate fast food more often when fast-food outlets were easily accessible, whereas the opposite was true for adolescents living in urban areas. The researchers, led by Lorna J. Fraser of the University of Leeds, conclude that although the need continues to exist for nutritional education regarding fast food, placing restrictions on the location of fast-food outlets may not decrease consumption of fast food in the same ways in all areas.

Brian E. Saelens and Lawrence D. Frank, along with their colleagues, authored two papers for the theme issue. "Obesogenic Neighborhood Environments, Child and Parent Obesity: The Neighborhood Impact on Kids Study" evaluated child and parent weight status across neighborhoods in Seattle and San Diego and ultimately found evidence that GIS-based definitions of obesogenic neighborhoods that consider both physical activity and the availability of healthy food options were strongly related to childhood obesity.

In a second study, the researchers used GIS-based measures to determine the 'walkability' and proximity to healthy food of certain neighborhoods in the San Diego and Seattle regions. The study recommends that such measures be used to study physical activity, nutrition and obesity outcomes.

In a paper titled "Obesogenic Environments in Youth: Concepts and Methods from a Longitudinal National Sample," Janne Boone-Heinonen and colleagues describe the challenges inherent to longitudinal neighborhood environment research, as well as the insights they gained and the advances and remaining gaps in study design. The researchers note that understanding which neighborhood environment features influence weight gain in various age groups is essential to effectively prevent and reduce childhood obesity.

Two commentaries included in the theme issue examine the ways that computer-based GIS systemswhich transform geospatial data into visual representations of the real worldcan help prevent childhood obesity. "Thinking About Place, Spatial Behavior, and Spatial Process in Childhood Obesity" by Stephen A. Matthews, outlines the content of the theme, concluding that although GIS is not a panacea, it "offers an important means of better understanding and dealing with some of the most pressing problems of our time, and provides valuable tools for researchers and policymakers alike."

The second commentary, providing a perspective from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, notes that while GIS is still in the relatively early stages of application in the field, it might one day enhance understanding of the complex and dynamic connections between people, their health and their physical and social environments.

Kaspersky Lab Software - Computers and Technology

If there is a race among the most awarded and recognized anti-virus computer programs in the world, the line of Kaspersky Lab software would surely lead the battle. Today, the software package is one of the most sought-after and in-demand computer protection applications in the world. There is no doubt about the capabilities and the potentials of Kaspersky Lab software.

To understand the software better, it would be appropriate to first look at its origins. Kaspersky Lab software is developed, created and distributed by the Russian technology firm Kaspersky Lab. The company is a security firm co-founded by its namesake Eugene Kaspersky and Natalia Kasperskaya in 1997. From its offices in Moscow, the software has been launched and distributed by several offices and affiliates found across the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, Romania, China, France and of course, the United States.

Kaspersky Lab software is a basic computer protection package offering anti-spyware and anti-virus services. The computer program has created its niche in making sure viruses are detected, quarantined and even cleaned. Aside from the basic services, Kaspersky Lab software is also reliable as an anti-spam and as an anti-intrusion computer product.

Major awards and recognitions

As always, computer protection programs are rewarded and recognized by several players, experts and industry bodies in the market. For its part, the Kaspersky Lab software package is well recognized and renowned in the market. No one will ever question the reliability of the software.

Red Herring magazine in 2005 named Kaspersky Lab software as among the in-demand and sought-after ?Red Herring 100? in Europe. The category is a selection of the top 100 European firms. The qualification ranged from being a technology product and at the same time a timely and effective innovation. No doubt that Kaspersky Lab software is an important and popular innovation in its own rights.

More recognition

The UK-based technology magazine PC Pro included Kaspersky Lab software, particularly the 2007 Kaspersky online security version 7 among the highly commended A List. Tests and trials about the program have found that indeed, Kaspersky Lab software is among the fastest and most effective when it comes to detection rates or different viruses.

On top of those, Kaspersky Lab software has always been topping the comparative tests conducted by the Virus Bulletin since August 2003. Global expert magazine PC World has acknowledged and described Kaspersky Lab software as the fastest updating new tool against different viruses and computer security threats.

Above all, the greatest recognition Kaspersky Lab software has received is the direct recognition from consumers themselves. The strong and constantly robust sales of the computer protection program has become a potent indication that in actuality, consumers are looking at Kaspersky Lab software as a really effective and functional anti-virus and computer protection application.

Collaboration with other software

Kaspersky Lab software is undoubtedly among the bests there are in the current market. Aside from the factors described and identified, recognition for the Kaspersky Lab software is most evident with the numerous deals Kaspersky Lab entered to allow other computer security vendors to use Kaspersky Lab software as a base for their own and respective safety programs.

Among the solutions and products that used and integrated the Kaspersky Lab software into their own systems are the Juniper Networks, Bluecoat, Check Point, Netintelligence, Sybari, F-Secure, FrontBridge, G-Data and GFI Software. All in all, there are about 120 different companies and software writers that have secured licenses to integrate and use the Kaspersky Lab software into their own systems and products.

[PAX East] Exposing The Harassment Female Gamers Receive Online

The age-old rule that ?girls don?t game? has been proven to be a myth, as every year, the percentage of gamers who are female continues to grow. What isn?t a myth, however, is the treatment that those female players receive online?which was the subject of the PAX East panel ?N00dz or GTFO! Harassment in Online Gaming?.

The panel was hosted by Elisa Melendez, Jenny Haniver, Morgan Romine, and Grace (gtz). Two of the panelists?Jenny and Grace?specifically run websites (notinthekitchenanymore.com and fatuglyorslutty.com respectively) devoted to giving examples of the treatment that female gamers receive from their male counterparts.

Below is one of those examples that was shown as to what kinds of messages the various panelists had received. The language is a little mature?or, should I say, immature?but it helps to underscore the point being made.

Funny? Messages like these do make your laugh?but the question is if that laughter comes from actual comedy, shock, or bewilderment that a male player would think things like this are okay to say to female players. (And really, it isn?t just female players, but more on that in a moment.)

One of the first topics brought up was a simple question: Do you gender yourself in terms of your online handle and/or profile? Or do you pick things that won?t make you stand out as being female? Grace mentioned that she uses a gender-neutral name and profile, while Jenny stated that she has a female-sounding name (along with usually using a headset, which helps even more in making her gender clear when playing online.)

I found myself really being bothered that the panel was even having such a conversation?and the fact that we do? have to have such conversations. Why should female game players even have to consider hiding who they are to avoid harassment? Why should they need to pretend to be male, or avoid any identifications so that others will just assume that they are? That?s like asking somebody to ?pretend not to be Jewish? or ?pretend not to be gay? in order to avoid ignorant comments from others.

This conversation lead into a video presented for the panel?one which took a light-hearted approach at looking at what is a very serious subject. Done as a sort of 1950?s-era educational video, we see a housewife who wants to take a break from her duties as wife and mother by playing a few rounds of online gaming. Unfortunately, she doesn?t know the proper etiquette for doing so! So she?and us, the viewers?are taught the three important rules for female players who want to go online:

  • Don?t choose a distracting name?as in, one which will remind male players that women actually exist
  • Don?t choose a distracting avatar?as in, again, one which is anything but male
  • Don?t distract other players with your voice

For that last one, members of the panel explained that many times, simply speaking to other players caused them to get nasty responses. Jenny mentioned one particular game she remembered, where no matter what she was trying to say to her teammates, one guy would give her no response other than ?shut up, bitch?.

Even when we know about the harassment female gamers receive via online games, there?s still some myths that go around that the panel brought up. One is that many times, the blame for such harassment is put on ?13 year olds??when in fact, on average, younger players are far more polite, and the real source of harassment typically comes from older players. That?s not to say that younger players don?t engage in such harassment, however?and another myth that isn?t true is that kids will grow out of such activities. If younger players are allowed or encouraged to treat female players in such a way, then they?ll have no reason to ever stop thinking it?s okay to do so.

So how do we solve all of this? It?s a problem that requires a variety of solutions. The biggest piece of that is something I?ve long believed?that avoiding the problem won?t make it go away. ?Don?t feed the trolls? is a recommendation often brought up online, but this is one case where being quiet won?t solve anything.

Male players need to speak up and speak out when they see or hear female gamers being harassed by other male players?as hard as that be for those male players to do at times. At the same time, women have to know that they aren?t alone. Both Grace and Jenny said that while their websites are aimed at showing the ugly side of online gaming, there?s also a huge benefit to doing so. It allows other female players the chance to understand that they aren?t alone in this?and it can help them in taking some power away from their harassers.

Jenny brought up an email that she received from a woman named Sara. Sara never liked using a headset when playing games online, because she was afraid of getting identified as female. However, after visiting Jenny?s website, Sara felt like she had gotten a look at the worst of what was out there?and realized that maybe she could deal with it after all.

We also have to keep talking about this conversation?and not allow it to go away or be swept under a rug. The Cross Assault controversy was brought up, and in my own following of all of that, I?ve seen plenty of people ask why this is ?suddenly a topic of conversation?, or stating that the community needs to deal with it themselves and that ?outsiders? should stay out of it. Life doesn?t work that way unfortunately; if we don?t put pressure on people to change, or continue to point out such inadequacies in gaming or its community, people often won?t feel any pressure or need to change.

Elisa mentioned that she?d been asked why she?d want to write a paper about gender inequality and harassment in gaming, as ?everybody already knows about all of this.? She said that there?s still power in naming this oppression, and that that brining of awareness and community around such issues is still very important.

While N00dz or GTFO! was centered specifically around the treatment that female gamers receive online, it?s part of a much bigger picture: The treatment any and all minorities receive in such situations. Be it race, gender, sexuality, gender identity, culture, or a variety of other aspects, too often the gaming community is far too eager to allow itself to be divided?and too quick to attack one another just for a laugh or an ego boost.

We?re all in this for the same reason: We love video games, and we want to share that love with others who do as well. Even beyond online gaming or the fighting game community or whatever else, we need to admit that the entire community as a whole is still extremely immature and exclusive to a wide variety of people. We need more conversations like these?not less. And, while the solution isn?t to respond to those doing such harassment with threats of violence (or worse), we also can?t allow those people to continue to have power over others.

All of us should be actively working to make gaming a better place for everyone?no matter who they are.
