UNITED NATIONS?The U.S. and China introduced a new round of sanctions against North Korea at the United Nations that the U.S. said would significantly impede the development of Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs, in response to its test last month of an atomic bomb.
The sanctions would, among other measures, bring new focus to North Korea's financial transactions and the activities of its diplomats abroad, and call on nations to help prevent leaders of the poverty-stricken country from obtaining specific luxury items, including yachts and race cars, U.N. Security Council diplomats said.

Diamondbacks 0, Mexico 1: Arizona Gets Quesadilla'd
While the pitching was very good tonight, Tyler Skaggs and Ian Kennedy each throwing three shutout innings, the first run allowed by Brad Ziegler this year proved crucial. The D-backs managed only four hits, and were blanked by Mexico at Salt River Fields.
Ian Kennedy was the starter for the Diamondbacks, and had a solid outing, posting three shutout innings on two hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. Admittedly, he got some significant help from the Mexicans, who came down with a case of Montezuma's Revenge i.e. a bad case of the runs. After putting two on with one out in the third, they managed to contrive a play I'd not seen before, managing to get both runners picked off on the same play. Kennedy got the lead-runner off second, and after he was tagged, Cliff Pennington alertly flipped the ball to John McDonald, who tagged the trail runner as he tried to advance from first. Double TOOTBLAN?
However, the Diamondbacks hitters were having no more success against the Mexican pitchers - and there was a different one of those every inning. Through five innings, Arizona had managed only a single hit; A.J. Pollock singled in the second. There were some walks, but also an ocelot of strikeouts: seven of the first 11 outs recorded by Arizona, came as a result of the K, 12 in total, and about three-quarters of those were caught looking. Paul Goldschmidt had a particularly bad evening: while he did walk in the first, he then struck out his next two at-bats, failed to dig out throws to first on a couple of occasions, and committed an error.
After a scoreless fourth by Putz, the fifth brought in Brad Ziegler, who did something he hadn't done this spring - allowed a ball to be hit to the outfield. In fact, two of them, sandwiching a ground-out that advanced the runner to second, so the latter one resulted in the deadlock being broken, Mexico taking the lead 1-0. After that, the visiting team loaded the bases thanks to a couple of gaffes by the Arizona infield: Cliff Pennington tripped over his own feet trying to shovel the ball to second, and on the next batter, Goldschmidt's throw down to second hit the runner in the back. Bases loaded, one out: Ziegler calmly generated his third double-play ball: this one was safely converted.
Tyler Skaggs came in and initially had his best outing of the spring, working two scoreless innings, with no walks, three strikeouts and just the one hit. That was over the head of Tony Campana, with the ball then ballooning back over his head off the wall, and turning into a triple. However, Skaggs responded in fine style, striking out the next two batters to strand the runner there. The third was trickier, with a pair of singles and a walk, to load them up with one out: a couple of foul-outs kept it a one-run game. Can't complain about a final line of 3 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 R - Nick Piecoro reports that Skaggs's fastball was getting there at up to 94 mph.
The offense was still struggling: Pennington singled to lead off the sixth, but that was followed with three consecutive looking K's. Alfredo Marte got the third hit of the night, doubling to the wall in right-center with one out in the eighth. Mark Teahen followed with a walk, but Josh Wilson struck out, and Nick Ahmed grounded out. Charles Brewer worked a scoreless ninth on a couple of hits, helped by another MexiTOOTBLAN, on a failed squeeze play. Tony Campana singled with one out, and it was fun to see him on the basepaths, though with a left-hander on the mound, it was always going to be tough, and he was out on a force.
Tuffy Gosewisch got into one, but it dies in the cool evening air and found the glove of the Mexican left-fielder to end a disappointing night for the Arizona offense. Still, the pitching was definitely a positive, with Kennedy and Skaggs both looking good. A fun GDT too, with 370 comments: soco cracked three figures, Clefo fell just short, and I was in 3rd. If You?re Worried About Likes, Avoid Posting To Facebook From Twitter
Facebook is showing your content to far fewer people than they used to, says Nick Bilton at the NY Times, pointing out that while his subscribers have soared, the number of likes per post has declined rapidly. Josh Constine writes his thoughts here. Bilton’s theory is that Facebook wants to incent people to pay to promote their content, so they show unpaid content to far fewer people. Hunter Walk has other theories (and correctly points out that comparing old data to new could be explained in other ways as well). Occam’s Razor suggests Bilton is right, simply because Facebook has the incentive to make the free views scarce to increase demand for the paid views. But I just don’t know. As an aside, when I promoted a post back in November, Facebook told me I “had 969x as many views because you promoted it.” Here’s what I do know – if you really care about Facebook likes, don’t just post your stuff to Twitter and then rely on it being republished automatically to Facebook. In my sample size of one, Facebook penalizes you significantly for that and shows that content to far fewer people. I have Twitter auto post to my Facebook page, and I occasionally post things directly to Facebook as well. I’ve always noticed that the direct-to-Facebook approach generates far more likes, but I’ve never actually gone back and run the averages. Today I did, although only for the last few weeks of posts. Here’s what I found. The average post published to Facebook by Twitter gets 13.6 likes. The average direct to Facebook post gets 81.1 likes. Postmenopausal women who smoked are more likely to lose teeth due to periodontal disease
Mar. 1, 2013 ? Postmenopausal women who have smoked are at much higher risk of losing their teeth than women who never smoked, according to a new study published and featured on the cover of the Journal of the American Dental Association by researchers at the University at Buffalo.
The study involved 1,106 women who participated in the Buffalo OsteoPerio Study, an offshoot of the Women's Health Initiative, (WHI), the largest clinical trial and observational study ever undertaken in the U.S., involving more than 162,000 women across the nation, including nearly 4,000 in Buffalo.
The UB study is the first to examine comprehensive smoking histories for participants that allowed the researchers to unravel some of the causes behind tooth loss in postmenopausal women who smoked.
Smoking has long been associated with tooth loss, but postmenopausal women, in particular, experience more tooth loss than their male counterparts.
"Regardless of having better oral health practices, such as brushing and flossing, and visiting the dentist more frequently, postmenopausal women in general tend to experience more tooth loss than men of the same age," says Xiaodan (pronounced Shee-ao-dan) Mai, a doctoral student in epidemiology in the UB Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions. "We were interested in smoking as a variable that might be important."
While fewer adults lose their teeth now than in past decades, tooth loss is associated with poor health outcomes, including stroke, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
In the UB study, heavy smokers -- defined as those who had at least 26 pack-years of smoking, or the equivalent of having smoked a pack a day for 26 years -- were nearly twice as likely to report having experienced tooth loss overall and more than six times as likely to have experienced tooth loss due to periodontal disease, compared to those who never smoked.
Participants provided information to researchers using a detailed questionnaire covering smoking history. Each participant also underwent a comprehensive oral examination and reported to the dental examiners reasons for each tooth lost. In some cases, the patient's dental records also were reviewed.
"We found that heavy smokers had significantly higher odds of experiencing tooth loss due to periodontal disease than those who never smoked," explains Mai. "We also found that the more women smoked, the more likely they experienced tooth loss as a result of periodontal disease."
On the other hand, they found that smoking was a less important factor in tooth loss due to caries. That's an important distinction, says Mai.
"Periodontal disease is a chronic, inflammatory condition that may be related to the development of cancer," she explains.
The paper notes that cigarette smoke may accelerate periodontal disease and that other studies suggest that chemicals found in smoke may favor plaque-forming bacteria that could reduce the ability of saliva to be antioxidative. Nicotine also has been shown to reduce bone density and bone mineral factors while estrogen hormones have been found to be lower among women who smoke.
Mai is now interested in pursuing research that could determine whether smokers with periodontal disease are at even greater risk for certain cancers than smokers without periodontal disease.
"Tooth loss due to periodontal disease is a prevalent condition among postmenopausal women that severely impacts their dietary intake, aesthetics, and overall quality of life," says Mai. "Women now have yet another, very tangible reason for quitting smoking."
