Indonesia Fires, Singapore Smog Likely Caused By Palm Oil Companies

Palm oil companies are suspected of illegally starting widespread forest fires in Indonesia in order to clear land for palm oil plantations, Indonesian officials say. The fires have caused record levels of hazardous smog in neighboring Singapore since Wednesday.

Reuters U.K. reported Friday that the destructive blazes on the island of Sumatra had been "deliberately set." Indonesian officials said eight companies were responsible for the fires, and more are likely to be named on Saturday, per Reuters.

"Since the fires are happening mostly on plantation lands, we believe there are plantation companies involved," Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, according to The Times of India. "The president has already put together a team to investigate who owns the plantations."

The paper notes that the illegal burning of forests generally happens from June to September each year -- during Indonesia's dry season.

"This recent smog is just the most visible part of the serious deforestation and human rights crisis sweeping Indonesia," Laurel Sutherlin of the Rainforest Action Network, a San Francisco-based environmental organization, told The Huffington Post via email Friday. "Widespread, illegal burning to clear rainforests and peatlands for palm oil and pulp and paper plantation expansion is unfortunately a well-established yearly ritual in Sumatra."

Complicating matters, some big palm oil companies that operate in Indonesia are based in Singapore or have Singaporean investors. According to a BBC report, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that if any Singaporean companies, or companies with a presence in Singapore, played a part in the fires, they would be held responsible.

Asia Pacific Resources International, which has palm oil operations on Sumatra and offices in a number of countries including Singapore, was one of the companies named by Indonesian officials in connection with the fires. However, the company says on its website that it has had a "no-burn policy" in place since 1994.

A staple for cooking throughout Southeast Asia and elsewhere, palm oil is the single largest traded vegetable oil commodity in the world, and global demand is rising rapidly, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says. The oil is increasingly used in the manufacture of cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals and industrial products. It is also used to make biodiesel fuel.

Indonesia produces more palm oil than anywhere else in the world, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The slash-and-burn methods apparently being used in the Indonesian jungle have caused the worst smog in Singapore's history. The Pollutant Standards Index reached a high of 401 in the city-state at noon on Friday, according to The Independent. A measurement over 400 is said to be life-threatening to sick and elderly people, the paper notes.

Singapore's prime minister said Thursday that the smog could last for weeks or more.

AdoptUSKids.org Celebrates 20,000 Foster Children Adopted Through Website (INFOGRAPHIC)

WASHINGTON -- Federal officials say 20,000 foster children have been adopted after being listed on a national website that links adoptive families with kids.

The number is especially significant because the majority of those adopted were not infants, but many were teens, minorities and those with disabilities.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius praised the efforts, but said Thursday that many more children still need permanent homes. More than 100,000 of the country's roughly 400,000 foster kids are looking for adoptive families.

The website, AdoptUSKids.org, gives prospective parents background information and a photo of each child. Once a parent indicates an interest, the website connects them with the child's caseworker.

Actor Bruce Willis was the face of the campaign when President George W. Bush launched it in 2002.

Weinstein Co. Shifts Meryl Streep-Julia Roberts 'August: Osage County' to Christmas

By Todd Cunningham

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Weinstein Company on Thursday shifted the release date of one of its main awards hopefuls, "August: Osage County," to Christmas Day. It had been scheduled to debut on November 8.

Christmas is getting crowded. Also set to debut on that day are Universal's Keanu Reeves action drama "47 Ronin," Paramount's Chris Pine-Keira Knightley action thriller "Jack Ryan" and the Fox comedy "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."

The studio also shifted "Grace of Monaco," a biopic starring Nicole Kidman as Hollywood star-turned-princess Grace Kelly, from December 27 to November 27, the day before Thanksgiving.

"August: Osage County" is directed by John Wells and produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. The cast includes Meryl Streep playing a pill-popping mother and Julia Roberts as her bitter daughter. Also featured are Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Abigail Breslin and Juliette Lewis.

The Tracy Letts play that inspired the film snagged just about every major theatrical prize including the Pulitzer when it debuted on Broadway in 2007.

U.S. cities, counties lose out without online sales tax: mayors

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. cities and counties lost out on $1.7 billion of new revenue this year because Congress has not passed a bill allowing states to tax Internet sales, a report released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors on Friday showed.

From 2011 through 2013, the additional revenue would have totaled $4.5 billion, according to economic research group IHS Global Insight, which was commissioned to produce the report.

Under a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, states can only tax Internet sales made by companies with a physical presence within their borders. That means online retailers charge sales tax in some states and not in others.

The U.S. Senate in spring passed legislation that would allow states to tax sales made beyond their borders. It faces an uncertain future in the House of Representatives, where Republicans have raised concerns that the tax could burden small online businesses.

The bill would exempt sellers with less than $1 million in nationwide sales from collecting sales taxes.

The Republican sponsor of the bill in the House, Steve Womack of Arkansas, told reporters earlier this week Congress has recently focused on other, larger pieces of legislation and he was not optimistic the bill would pass soon.

States, which collect most sales taxes, have said their budgets are hurting. Fitch Ratings estimated that states are losing $11 billion annually without the online tax.

Some local governments add their own taxes, ranging from 0.1 to 6 percent, IHS said.

State and local governments combined lost out on almost $14 billion this year by not being able to tax online sales, IHS estimated.

In 2012 New York City had the greatest loss, of $200 million. Phoenix and Chicago followed with $18 million each.

Mesa, Arizona, with an annual budget of $325 million, has lost out on $14 million over the last three years, the study found.

The number may not be large, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said, but Internet commerce will continue to grow and Congress must pass the legislation to "stop the bleeding." Mesa does not charge property taxes.

The bill would boost the city's revenue in two ways, because it relies heavily on state funds as well as sales taxes, said Smith.

"We're really bare bones and we're operating on the fringes in terms of additional revenue or additional cuts," he said, adding that any new revenue would go toward the police, parks, libraries and other services.

Norton Internet Security 21 Beta free download - Software reviews ...

Norton Internet Security 21 Beta

A first look at Norton's next generation security suite

Norton Internet Security 21 Beta is a preview of Norton's next security suite.

What's new? There's no official information on that yet. The core interface is essentially unchanged, though, so if you're familiar with the previous edition then you'll also feel immediately at home here.

We'll add further details as Norton releases them.

Don't expect too much, though - this is a beta, and whole chunks of functionality are missing (click the "Security" tab in Identity Safe's Settings box, say, and you'll just see a message saying "Security settings here"). The program seems stable from our first (very brief) look, but you still shouldn't use it as your sole security tool for very long.

Please note, you need to register to obtain a beta serial code to activate. The beta site will send an activation code to the email address you provide, so make sure it's working (Symantec says you'll also receive an email offering 50% off the final build "close to the final release date").

The core Norton Internet Security 21 interface feels much like the previous edition, but?information on new features has yet to be released, and?a first look already?shows various small improvements
