ARTICLES MANIAC ? Consider These Tips If Your Toddler Is ...

While it can be embarrassing, frustrating, and sometimes frightening, for the most part, this type of behavior by toddlers is a normal phase that they all pass through. This usually results from a frustration at not being able to express themselves, whether it?s wanting a toy or wanting your attention, and it?s also a part of their growth development.

Even though this phase can hit anywhere 14 months and up, it can be more noticeable when the child is exposed to others such as in a social setting or even in a childcare center. Even children who are linguistically advanced for their ages, are still children, and will be prone to the same frustrations as others.

Not overreacting is the first rule of thumb you should follow. While there are different schools of thought on spanking, this is not a situation where it is appropriate, and can only add fuel to the fire. A time-out is in order, generally about two minutes worth on a chair where they can?t stomp on the floor, or kick anything. You will also be given a chance to calm down because of this. You can explain when you sit them down that this time-out is because they have bit/hit/kicked someone and that is not allowed but during time-out, do not speak to them.

Explain to them once more when the time is up that because it hurts other people, then that behavior is not acceptable. A toddler is unlikely to be able to relate cause and effect then apply it to themselves which is why it?s not of much use to ask them how they would feel if someone bit them. But a non-confrontational ?punishment?, and explanation, tells them what they did wrong, and what will happen if they do it again.

If they go right out and repeat the action, take them back for another time-out. It would depend on the age of the child but what you can do is explain the concept of apologies and why they should make one. You should use positive reinforcement if they go right out and give their toy to the child that they kicked or praise them if they gave an apology, even if it comes with a kiss.

US: More work needed to stop youth tobacco use

(AP) ? More work needs to be done to keep young Americans from using tobacco, including creating smoking bans and increasing taxes on tobacco products, the U.S. Surgeon General's office said in a report released Thursday.

Almost one in five high school-aged teens smokes, down from earlier decades, but the rate of decline has slowed, the report said.

It says it's particularly important to stop young people from using tobacco because those who start smoking as teenagers can increase their chances of long-term addiction. They also quickly can experience reduced lung function, impaired lung growth, early heart disease and other health problems like asthma.

More than 80 percent of smokers begin by age 18 and 99 percent of adult smokers in the U.S. start by age 26, according to the 920-page report, which is the first comprehensive look at youth tobacco use from the surgeon general's office in nearly two decades.

"In order to end this epidemic, we need to focus on where we can prevent it and where we can see the most effect, and that's with young people," Surgeon General Regina Benjamin said in an interview with The Associated Press. "We want to make our next generation tobacco-free, and I think we can."

The report details youth tobacco use, health impacts, and tobacco marketing and prevention efforts in the U.S. Officials hope the information will reinvigorate anti-tobacco efforts and spark public activism in reducing death and disease caused by tobacco use.

The report also recommended anti-smoking campaigns and increased restrictions under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's authority to regulate tobacco as other ways to prevent adolescents and young adults from using tobacco products.

Benjamin did not point fingers on why youth tobacco use continues in the U.S. Instead, she wants to see how the nation as a whole can best address the issue, she said.

"I don't want to focus on blame, I want to focus on prevention," she said. "I want to make sure we're doing everything that we can to prevent kids from ever starting to smoke or use tobacco products."

The surgeon general's office last issued a report on youth tobacco use in 1994, the first wide-ranging report on the topic by federal health officials. The new report is the 31st issued by U.S. surgeons general to warn the public about tobacco's risks. The first report in 1964 declared tobacco to be deadly.

Since the 1994 report, smoking among high school students has declined from 27.5 percent to 19.5 percent, or about 3 million students, but the rate of decline has slowed in recent years. About 5.2 percent, or 600,000 middle school students also are current smokers. According to the report, every day in the U.S., more than 3,800 people under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette and more than 1,000 of them become daily smokers. They replace the 1,200 people who die each day in the U.S. from smoking.

"Too many of our children are addicted, too many cannot quit, and too many go on to die far too young," Assistant Secretary for Health Howard Koh said at a Thursday news conference.

The report also examined advertising and promotional activities by tobacco companies, which have been shown to "cause the onset and continuation of smoking among adolescents and young adults."

Tobacco companies have spent increasing amounts of money on marketing efforts to reduce prices, which health officials said in the report could influence access to price-sensitive youth and make cigarettes more affordable.

"Far too many kids still see smoking images and messages every day that normalize this dependence," Koh said. "Kids see smoking in the movies they watch, the video games they play, the websites they visit and in the communities where they live."

Nearly $10 billion was spent in 2008 on cigarette marketing by the nation's biggest tobacco companies, a 48 percent increase from what was spent in 1998, when some of the companies agreed with state attorneys general to curtail or stop some of their marketing efforts. That 25-year, $206 billion settlement also pays states for smoking-related health care costs and to support tobacco prevention and cessation programs.

"We have come a long way since the days of smoking on airplanes and in college classrooms, but we have a long way to go," Secretary of Health and Human Resources Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement accompanying the latest report. "The prosperity and health of our nation depend on it."

In a statement Thursday, Richmond, Va.-based Altria Group Inc., parent company of the nation's largest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, which makes the top-selling Marlboro brand, said it agrees that kids shouldn't use tobacco products and that it markets its products to adult tobacco users through age-verified direct communications and at retail stores.

"Underage tobacco use is a difficult issue, and there is not a simple solution," the company said. "We agree there's still more work to be done."

In concert with the report, the surgeon general's office is launching a contest for young people to submit videos on the report's findings that will ultimately chosen by the public to win cash prizes.

Reach Fitness Coach with an Accountability Partner | Tony Horton's ...

THIS WEEK: FIND FIT FRIENDS

As I write this week?s blog, I am getting ready to head home from a trip to Philadelphia
where I spent three days with my brother, Tony Horton, and three friends. We
were here to promote P90X and P90X-2 on QVC, the popular home shopping network.

As a busy, working mom, I don?t often get opportunities to get away and spend time with friends. In the past, a getaway may have included indulgences in drinking and eating
unhealthy foods as means of treating myself. I would have had fun while doing
so and then felt awful a few days later when reality set back in.

It?s challenging to stay accountable to your health and fitness plan when you are
constantly faced with temptation. We tend to avoid social engagements for this
very reason. However, why not build a network of friends who have similar
struggles as you, want to change and work together to help one another and stay
accountability to your goals? I did my first round of P90X in 2004 and at that
time I not only found a great health and fitness program that I could do at
home, on my own time, but I also met a wonderful community of people who helped
me stay on track. This group of people are friends to this day. I could not
have got through my first round of P90X without them. I would not be living the
lifestyle I do now without them.

When I was tempted to get unhealthy foods I saw Tony ordering something super
healthy.? When I wanted to do fewer reps doing our workout together I saw Jeremy Yost giving it his all. (BTW, he lost 180 lbs doing P90X!) You are around these people and you think to yourself, if they can do it, so can I. ?Then, instead of feeling like crud after three days, you come away feeling great. And you think to yourself, wowl, that wasn?t so hard after all! It was easy because we were all working as team, do the same things together! If any of them had sat at the bar and ordered a beer, then I would have been right there with them. But instead they all ordered Perrier, then so did I.

So, now you might be asking; should I ?de-friend? my friends who don?t eat healthy and
never exercise? Of course not. My guess is that the reason you are friends with
those people has much more to do with other things you have in common. And, as
you make consistent changes in your life one of two things usually happens. These
same friends will criticize you for making such ?drastic? changes in your life
and ?never having any fun? or they begin to see how great you feel and look and
will start asking questions and might follow your lead. And, just like that,
that circle of friends changes. The group who used to plan weekend getaways to
Vegas are now planning hike trips together. The group who used to go out on
Friday nights to imbibe is now meeting at Friday night fit club.

When attempting to change your life for the better, it?s so important that you
surround yourself with like-minded people. When you and the people around you
are the same page about what you want, it?s easier to make better choices. A
team is so much more powerful than one person when working together.

Odom playing Saturday for Mavs, not in D-League

(AP) ? Lamar Odom is rejoining the Dallas Mavericks without playing a planned game in the NBA Development League.

The Mavericks said Saturday that Odom has been recalled and will be in uniform for their game that night against Utah.

Odom had been set to play for the Texas Legends on Saturday night after missing four straight games for the Mavericks. He was assigned to the D-League team Friday.

Odom's last game was Feb. 20. The Mavericks have said he was away for a family matter and personal reasons.

After missing the Mavericks' last game before the All-Star break against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, Odom has missed all three games since the break.

The defending NBA champion Mavericks have lost four in a row.
