Rome's Colosseum remains open despite damage reports

Officials at the Colosseum ruins in Rome have confirmed that the popular attraction will remain open to tourists as normal, despite reports of damage to the structure earlier in the week.

The Italian news agency Ansa reported that pieces of the 2000-year-old amphitheatre, regarded as one of the most impressive feats of architecture in the Roman Empire, had fallen on Christmas Day, as well as on Tuesday.

However, the director of the Colosseum, Rossella Rea, was quick to downplay the sighting, while the culture ministry also insisted that "nothing had collapsed since the 18th century."

When contacted by Telegraph Travel, officials at the Colosseum said the attraction was open as normal and that there were no plans to close.

An employee at the Rome Tourist Board also said the site was safe to visit.

The Colosseum, which costs ?12 (?10) to enter, attracts up to two million tourists each year and is one of the most visited sites in the the city, second only to the Vatican.

A restoration project on the structure, which used to seat 50,000 spectators in Imperial Roman times, is due to take place in spring 2012.

Some Political New Year???s Resolutions (ContributorNetwork)

Mitt Romney: Take a long, hard look at Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign

With all of the rising and falling among the field of Republican presidential candidates over the last few months--from Michele Bachmann to Rick Perry to Herman Cain to Newt Gingrich to Ron Paul--Mitt Romney has remained steadily near the front. Now, less than a week before the Iowa Caucasus it would be easy to get over-confident, which is what Romney's campaign seems to be doing.

Remember four years ago when Hillary Clinton was assumed to be the presumptive nominee for the Democrats? In mid-December of 2007 some polls even suggested that she had a 29 point lead over Barack Obama for the nomination, and we all know how that turned out.

Rick Perry: Figure out how the federal government works

It would be a safe assumption to think that a presidential candidate would have a pretty good grasp on the government and how it works. That is until you meet G.O.P candidate Rick Perry. His gaffes have become the stuff of legend. We all know about his "oops moment," but earlier this month Perry also forgot that there are nine Supreme Court Justices. And last month, in the same sentence, he misstated the voting age and the date of the very election that he's hoping to win.

Newt Gingrich: Stop trying to be so smart and figure out how to run for president

I'm all for intelligence but Newt Gingrich needs to focus a bit less on the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and a bit more on, well, running for president. Sure, Gingrich can make historical analogies with the best of them, but if he's not on the ballot in his own home state, and, yes, Gingrich failed to do what it takes to get on the ballot in Virginia, than you're not going to win an election.

Barack Obama: Remember your campaign promises

Politics in America is about compromise and, of course, you can't win them all. But many on the political left have become disenchanted by President Obama's lack of commitment to the ideals that they thought he so strongly supported. From not shutting down Guantanamo, to increasing the use of drone attacks around the world, for many liberals Obama looks to have taken a page right out of the Bush Doctrine.

Company moving HQ to Charlotte, 162 new jobs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Gov. Bev Perdue announced?Wednesday that Infinisource Holdings Inc., a nationally known benefits administrator focused on small to mid-market firms, will move its headquarters and start a new division in Charlotte.

The company plans to create 162 jobs over the next five years with a $500,000 capital investment in Mecklenburg County. The project was made possible in part by a Job Development Investment Grant, according to a news release from the Governor's Office.

?Creating jobs is my top priority, and our top-ranked business climate that we have built over the years has convinced another major company, not just to do business in North Carolina, but to call it home,? Gov. Perdue said.?

Infinisource, an August 2011 acquisition of Infinisource Holdings Inc. (an Accel-KKR portfolio company), has more than 200 employees between its offices in Ohio, Florida and its regional headquarters in Michigan.? Established in 1986, Infinisource is a leading benefits administration provider, serving more than 17,700 clients in the United States.

The company?s expansion and corporate headquarters relocation in North Carolina will enable the launch of a division dedicated to Human Capital Management SaaS technology, which will help? employers manage their payroll, HR, benefits administration, talent management, time & attendance,? and compliance from a single cloud deployed platform.

In addition, Infinisource will consolidate other business elements ? including sales, implementation, customer service, and, information technology? in Charlotte.

?We chose Charlotte not only because it is a great place to live and work, but also because it is an excellent place to find talent. The successful launch of our new Human Capital Management? division will require strong candidates, and we feel confident we can find what we need in North Carolina,? said Gary Trainor, CEO of Infinisource Holdings Inc.

While individual wages for the 162 jobs will vary by job function, the overall average for the new jobs will be $81,296 annually, plus benefits. The Mecklenburg County average is $51,584.

To help facilitate this expansion, the state Economic Investment Committee today voted to award a Job Development Investment Grant to Infinisource. JDIGs are awarded only to new and expanding businesses and industrial projects whose benefits exceed the costs to the state and which would not be undertaken in North Carolina without the grant.

Under the terms of the JDIG, the company is eligible to receive a grant equal to 55 percent of the state personal income withholding taxes derived from the creation of new jobs for each of the eight years in which the company meets annual performance targets.? Under the JDIG program there are no up-front cash grants paid to the company. If Infinisource meets the targets called for under the agreement, the JDIG could yield $1.913 million in maximum benefits for the company over the next eight years.

In addition, up to $638,000 could be added to the state?s Utility Fund for infrastructure improvements in economically distressed counties. When a JDIG is awarded in the state?s more economically prosperous counties such as Mecklenburg, 25 percent of the grant award is allocated to the Utility Fund to encourage economic development in less prosperous counties.

Other partners that assisted with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges and the Charlotte Chamber.

Through Gov. Perdue?s JobsNOW initiative, the state continues to work aggressively to create well-paying jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.

Christmas Animal Parade

IMG 6053 Christmas Animal Parade

We had a great and simple Christmas this year in our cozy Paris flat. I grew up in a large family where my parents were school teachers but even though my parents didn?t make a lot they always did things to make our Christmas magical. Since I?ve started my own family I?ve tried to carry on that tradition. Click through to read more.

IMG 6056 Christmas Animal Parade

I especially like to do things to make Christmas extra special without spending money. It?s become a yearly tradition that we get their old animal toys, (Schleich are my favorite) tie ribbons on them and then set up an animal parade installation around the tree. When the kids wake up they find a big parade leading them to their presents! Do you have any ideas for making the holiday special?

A History Of President Obama's Approval Ratings

Loop 21 looks at the ?Rise and Fall? of Obama?s job approval ratings

Going into a new year with a bid for reelection, President Barack Obama?s job approval rating is pretty low, according to Gallup.

From Nov. 21-27 2011, groups party/ideology groups were surveyed and Obama lost 10 percent of ?pure independents? and eight percent of moderate/liberal Republicans since January 2011. If the Obama campaign needed a strategy to push him to a 50% threshold of job approval rating, they could consider targeting those groups. Gaining more support from ?Moderate Democrats? could also be beneficial for the Obama campaign. In January of this year, Moderate Democrats gave Obama an 81 percent job approval rating, which slumped by six points to 75 percent, when asked again in November.

Football: Moyes lauds O'Neill impact

Published: 25 Dec 2011 - 14:46:53

Everton coach David Moyes says Martin O'Neill has proved his managerial skills in just three weeks in the Sunderland hotseat.

Former Celtic and Aston Villa boss O'Neill ended 16 months out of the game by succeeding Steve Bruce earlier this month.

Two wins in three games have moved the Black Cats out of the drop zone and Moyes does not think that is a coincidence.

Moyes, whose men face Sunderland on Wearside on Monday, said: "What would you expect Martin to do? You would expect him to come in and make an improvement. He has already done that.

"It is the mark of a really good manager, someone who can come in and make a difference right away."

Moyes, in charge at Goodison Park for a decade, believes O'Neill's recent break from the game has likely been a bonus.

"I think once you have been out of it and you come back, you are full of it.

"No matter what job you are in, if somebody says you can have a break and you don't need to work, when you come back it is great, I am sure.

"It has suited Martin. I am not saying it would suit me or anyone else."

Everton are currently only three points clear of their rivals but have a good record against Sunderland, having not lost in their 13 previous meetings, winning 10 of them.

With the transfer window looming Moyes says his options are limited.

"Agents are ringing up now and some of the names they are putting in are ridiculous - far too much money for players who are well past it or not at the level we expect.

"If we can get someone who can score goals, that is what we need," added Moyes, in recognition that his side have scored just 17 goals in 16 league games.

Sunderland defender Wes Brown meanwhile says the same players who got Sunderland into early-season problems can bring about a resurgence.

Brown scored a late winner at QPR in midweek to lift the Black Cats clear of the drop zone and insists: "We have always had it. The players haven't changed, we have always had it in the team. We managed to get that break on Wednesday night, and hopefully we can carry on from there and have a good Christmas period."

Day of violence in northern Nigeria kills at least 24 (Reuters)

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Clashes between a violent Islamist sect and security forces in Nigeria's northeastern city of Damaturu have killed at least 24 people in the past day, police said on Friday.

A sustained gun battle broke out between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamist militants in Damaturu on Thursday, and several explosions were heard.

Then on Friday suspected sect members opened fire on a group of policemen shortly after Friday prayers in the city, killing four, local police officials said.

Police commissioner Lawan Tanko of Yobe state, of which Damaturu is the capital, told Reuters a dusk to dawn curfew had been imposed on the city.

"The situation is now calm. We lost seven security men and twelve members of the Boko Haram sect were killed in the shoot out last night," he said.

"Though you cannot predict members of the sect, our men and the military are combat ready. Only one civilian was killed (in the violence on Thursday)."

Confrontations between security forces and the Boko Haram sect have become increasingly frequent in the past couple of weeks, as the north's simmering conflict escalates, though the insurgency remains low level and sporadic.

Nigerian police arrested 14 suspected members of Boko Haram and seized explosives after a gun battle left four militants and three policemen dead in the city of Kano last weekend.

Lawan said the fighting in Damaturu broke out after his men raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout.

Damaturu was the scene of the most deadly Boko Haram assault to date, when 65 people were killed in a wave of shootings and bombings on November 5 that left churches, police stations and mosques reduced to smoldering rubble.

At least 11 people were killed in a separate shootout in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Boko Haram's heartland, on Thursday, an official at the morgue said.

Morturary attendant Bab Aminu said he had received the bodies overnight.

Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as "Western learning is forbidden" has been blamed for scores of shootings and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks in the past few weeks across the region.

Despite many crackdowns, Nigerian security forces have so far been unable to contain Boko Haram violence. This year the group struck in the capital Abuja twice, including a suicide car bomb attack against the U.N. headquarters that killed 26 people.

Wednesday's "M:I:4"'s $8.6M reinvigorates box office (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" shot its way to the top of the box office Wednesday, collecting a solid $8.6 million, according to early studio estimates.

By contrast, on the Wednesday before Christmas last year, Universal's "Little Fockers" was the No. 1 film with just $7.1 million.

The strong "M:I:4" showing led a flurry of strong weekday performances by other new films Wednesday.

In its first full day of domestic wide release, Sony's "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" grossed $3.5 million at 2,914 domestic locations.

Paramount's Steven Spielberg-directed "Tintin," meanwhile, took $2.3 million during its U.S. debut Wednesday. It's playing at 3,087 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

In its sixth day of release, "Sherlock Holmes -- A Game of Shadows" grossed $4.3 million, continuing a strong rebound after a disappointing first weekend.

Paramount/Skydance's "M:I:4" -- the fourth in the "Mission: Impossible" series -- now has grossed $25.7 million domestically and $85 million internationally.

The PG-13 film, directed by Brad Bird and starring Tom Cruise, opened at 425 large-format screens Friday. Its wide release began at 5 p.m. Tuesday, making Wednesday its first full day of wide release. It is now screening at 3,455 locations.

Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes -- A Game of Shadows," which opened to $39.6 million, has grossed a total of $54 million. The PG-13 movie directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, is showing signs of strength at its 3,703 locations. The movie took in $4.9 million on Monday, $5.2 million on Tuesday.

Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," David Fincher's R-rated adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novels, opened at 7 p.m. Tuesday. In its first five hours of release, the movie grossed $1.55 million. It more than doubled that in its first full day Wednesday, and has now taken in a total of $5.1 million at 2,914 locations.

Paramount's other new release, Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin," opened at 3,087 locations Wednesday and, because it opened in Quebec December 9, now has a North American total of $5.57 million. Internationally, the motion-capture animated movie has grossed nearly $240 million.

This is the weekend Hollywood has been looking forward to. After a wretched few weeks, studios are expecting audiences to return to movies in large numbers.

Still to be released: Fox's comedy "We Bought a Zoo," on Friday, and DreamWorks' World War I drama "War Horse," also from Spielberg, which hits theaters on Sunday. Also Sunday, Summit releases its R-rated sci-fi thriller "The Darkest Hour."

Kenya HIV families torn between health or food (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? Rising food prices are taking a toll in East Africa on low-income people who have the virus that causes AIDS.

An expert on HIV/AIDS for the World Food Program says some HIV patients are refusing to take their medicine. Some fear that the nausea they would get from taking the drugs without adequate food will make them too weak to work, or even to look for work.

In Nairobi, Rosalia Adhiambo won't take free anti-HIV drugs because she can't afford to both feed her grandniece and herself. So she feeds 5-year-old Emily and doesn't take the medicine.

The U.N. says 2011 prices for staple foods are almost twice as high as they were in 2009, forcing the poor to make hard choices between food, medicine and shelter.

Smallest-ever exoplanets found, one step closer to Earth-twin

These planets, while roughly the size of our planet Earth, are circling very close to their star, giving them fiery temperatures that are most likely too hot to support life, researchers said.

This story was updated at 1:54 p.m. ET.

Two planets orbiting a star 950 light-years from Earth are the smallest, most Earth-size alien worlds known, astronomers announced today (Dec. 20). One of the planets is actually smaller than Earth, scientists say.

These planets, while roughly the size of our planet Earth, are circling very close to their star, giving them fiery temperatures that are most likely too hot to support life, researchers said. The discovery, however, brings scientists one step closer to finding a?true twin of Earth?that may be habitable.

"We've crossed a threshold: For the first time, we've been able to detect planets smaller than the Earth around another star," lead researcher Fran?ois Fressin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., told SPACE.com. "We proved that Earth-size planets exist around other stars like the sun, and most importantly, we proved that humanity is able to detect them. It's the beginning of an era."

To discover the new planets, Fressin and his colleagues used?NASA's Kepler space telescope, which noticed the tiny dips in the parent star's brightness when the planets passed in front of it, blocking some of its light (this is called the transit method). The researchers then used ground-based observatories to confirm that the planets actually exist by measuring minute wobbles in the star's position caused by gravitational tugs from its planets.

"These two new planets are the first genuinely?Earth-sized?worlds that have been found orbiting a sunlike star," University of California, Santa Cruz astronomer Greg Laughlin, who was not involved in the new study, said in an email to SPACE.com. "For the past two decades, it has been clear that astronomers would eventually reach this goal, and so it's fantastic to learn that the detection has now been achieved." [Gallery: Smallest Alien Planets Ever Seen]

Chances for life

The two Earth-size planets are among five alien worlds orbiting a star called Kepler-20 that is of the same class (G-type) as our sun, and is slightly cooler.

Two of the star system's planets, Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are 0.87 times and 1.03 times the width of Earth, respectively, making them the smallest exoplanets yet known. They also appear to be rocky, and have masses less than 1.7 and 3 times Earth's mass, respectively. Scientists think that they are composed mainly of silicates and iron, much like the Earth, though they lack our planet's atmsophere.

Kepler-20e makes a circle around its star once every 6.1 days at a distance of 4.7 million miles (7.6 million kilometers) ? almost 20 times closer than Earth, which orbits the sun at around 93 million miles (150 million km).

The planet's sibling, Kepler-20f, makes a full orbit every 19.6 days, at a distance of 10.3 million miles (16.6 million km). Both planets circle closer to their star than Mercury does to the sun. [Infographic: Earth-Size Alien Planets Explained]

These snuggly orbits around their star give the newfound planets steamy temperatures of about 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit (760 degrees Celsius) and 800 degrees Fahrenheit (430 degrees Celsius) ? way too warm to support liquid water, and probably life, researchers said.

Fressin said the chance of life on either of these planets is "negligible," though the researchers can't exclude the possibility that they used to be habitable in the past, when they might have been farther from their star. There is also a slim chance that there are habitable regions on the planets in spots between their day and night sides (the planets orbit with one half constantly facing their star and the other half always in dark). But astronomers aren't holding out hope.

"The chances of liquid water and life as we know it on Kepler-20e and f are zero," Laughlin said.

Flip-flopped planets

The planetary system around Kepler-20 is an unusual one.

For one thing, scientists say the rocky planets can't have formed in their current locations.

"There's not enough rocky material that close to the host star to form five planets," Fressin said. "They didn't form here; they probably formed farther from their star and migrated in."

Furthermore, the five planets are in an odd order, with the rocky worlds alternating with their gaseous, Neptune-size siblings. That's quite different from most solar systems, including our own, which keeps the rocky terrestrial worlds in close to the sun, with the gas giants farther out.

"The architecture of that solar system is crazy," science team member David Charbonneau of Harvard University said during a Tuesday telecon announcing the finding. "This is the first time that we've seen anything like this."

Scientists will likely have to revise their theories of how planets form to fully understand the Kepler-20 system.

"How did that form?" Fressin said. "I think it's a puzzle the theorists will have to try to explain."

The star's other planets are called Kepler-20b, 20c, and 20d. Their diameters are 15,000 miles (24,000 km), 24,600 miles (40,000 km), and 22,000 miles (35,000 km), respectively, and they orbit Kepler-20 once every 3.7, 10.9, and 77.6 days.

The largest of these, Kepler-20d, weighs a little under 20 times Earth's mass, while Kepler-20c is 16.1 times as heavy as Earth, and Kepler-20b is 8.7 times our planet's mass.

Evolving effort

Scientists say finding the smallest exoplanets yet represents a significant milestone in the fast-evolving effort to learn about planets beyond the solar system.

The first alien planet was discovered in 1996, and the first planet found through the transit method came just 11 years ago. Both of those planets were roughly the size of Jupiter.

"I think we're living in special times," Fressin said. "This was unfeasible 10 years ago, and just with the quality of detectors and the quality of the treatment is it possible now."

The total tally of?known alien planets is above 700. Kepler alone has discovered 28 definite alien planets, and 2,326 planet candidates, since its launch in March 2009.

Earlier this month, the Kepler team announced another landmark find, the?first planet known to occupy the habitable zone?around its star where liquid water, and perhaps life, could exist.

That planet, called Kepler-22b, is about 2.4 times as wide as Earth.

The dream now is for astronomers to combine the two discoveries and find an Earth-size planet that's also orbiting its star in an Earth-like orbit that puts it in the habitable zone.

"The holy grail of the search for other worlds is to find an Earth analogue, a true Earth twin," Fressin said. "We just need to have these two pieces of the puzzle together."

While the newfound planets orbit with periods of 6.1 and 19.6 days, Fressin estimated the habitable zone around Kepler-20 begins at orbits that take roughly 100 days to make a circuit.

Astronomers think it's only a?matter of time before they finally find one?that's just right.

"These discoveries are a great technological step forward ? to detect small planets, in size like Earth ? but these planets are very hot and not in the habitable zone around their star," astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics wrote in an email. Kaltenegger, who studies the habitability of exoplanets, was not involved in the new study. "If we can already find these small planets with radii around Earth's now, some future ones could be in the habitable zone of their stars and THOSE future ones would be great targets to look for liquid water and signatures for life."

A paper detailing the discovery was published online in the journal Nature Dec. 20.

Oracle misfires in fiscal 2Q, raising tech worries (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Oracle stumbled in its latest quarter as the business software maker struggled to close deals, a signal of possible trouble ahead for the technology sector.

The performance announced Tuesday covered a period of economic turbulence which has raised concerns that major companies and government agencies may curtail technology spending.

Oracle's results for the three months ending in November suggested the cutbacks have already started. Management reinforced that perception with a forecast calling for meager growth in the current quarter, which ends in February. The developments alarmed investors, causing Oracle Corp. shares to slide 10 percent.

In a telling sign of weakening demand, Oracle's sales of new software licenses edged up just 2 percent from the same time last year. Analysts had expected a double-digit gain in new software licenses. The company had predicted an increase of at least 6 percent and as much as 16 percent.

Wall Street focuses on this part of the business because selling new software products generates a stream of future revenue from maintenance and upgrades.

Oracle's software is a staple in companies and government agencies throughout the world. Its database products help companies store and manage information. Its line of applications automates a wide range of administrative tasks.

Part of the problem was that technology decision makers delayed signing contracts during the final few days of the quarter, according to Safra Catz, Oracle's chief financial officer. That could be an indication that companies and financially strapped government agencies are treading more carefully as Europe's debt problems threaten to hobble a still-fragile global economy.

"Clearly, this quarter was not what we thought it would be," Catz told analysts during a Tuesday conference call. She said the company is hoping some of the deals that were postponed in the last quarter will be completed within the next two months.

Oracle's weakest markets were in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Things looked even bleaker in Oracle's computer hardware division, which the company has been trying to build since buying fallen Silicon Valley star Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion last year. Oracle's hardware revenue dropped 10 percent from the same time last year

Oracle earned $2.2 billion, or 43 cents per share, in its fiscal second quarter. That was a 17 percent increase from net income of $1.9 billion, or 37 cents per share at the same time last year.

If not for certain items, Oracle said it would have earned 54 cents per share. That figure fell below the average estimate of 57 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue for the period edged up 2 percent from last year to $8.8 billion. Analysts, on average, had projected revenue of $9.2 billion.

In the current quarter, Oracle expects its adjusted earnings per share to range from 55 cents to 58 cents ? below the average analyst estimate of 59 cents per share. Revenue is expected to rise by 2 percent to 5 percent from the same time in the previous year. If Oracle hits that top end of that target, it would translate to revenue of about $9.2 billion ? below the analyst estimate of $9.4 billion, according to FactSet.

Oracle has expanded its sales force by about 1,700 people to fish for more customers during the second half of its fiscal year. About 111,000 employees worked at Oracle as of Nov. 30.

The company's shares shed $2.91 to hit $26.26 in extended trading after the second-quarter figures were released. The stock has been sagging since hitting $36.50 in May.

In an effort to bolster the stock, Oracle announced it will spend an additional $5 billion to buy back its shares. The company, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., didn't set a timetable to complete the stock purchases. Oracle spent about $1 billion buying 33 million shares in its most recent quarter.

Kill Weeds in Sidewalk Cracks with White Vinegar [Video]

Kill Weeds in Sidewalk Cracks with White Vinegar The Winter Solstice is only a few days away, but here in the temperate South we still have weeds growing. If you need a handy way to kill weeds, especially those that grow in sidewalk or driveway cracks, pour white vinegar in a pressurized spray bottle and liberally coat any area with weeds. The acetic acid in vinegar will kill most types of plant life within 24 hours, so don't spray any plants you want to keep alive.

Gardening weblog Gardening Rhythms recommends filling your spray bottle to ? of capacity and claims that vinegar is more effective than chemical sprays as it will kill the weeds overnight while some herbicides can take up to a week.

Nigeria seizes bomb factory after Islamist attacks (Reuters)

MAIDUGURI/KANO (Reuters) ? Nigerian authorities raided a bomb making factory Saturday belonging to suspected members of an Islamist sect in the northeast, the military said, after gun and bomb attacks across northern Nigeria over four days killed at least seven people.

Militant group Boko Haram is waging a low level insurgency against Nigeria's government. It used to be largely confined to its remote northeast Borno state, but this year has struck other provinces in the mostly Muslim north and the capital, Abuja.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Hassan, spokesman for the joint military task force (JTF) for Borno state, said the factory was discovered in a house in the Bolori ward of the state's main city of Maiduguri.

"A major factory for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), large quantities of unused IED materials, AK 47 rifles, ammunition and other vital items have been discovered by the JTF," he told a late Saturday news briefing.

The find came after several attacks mostly targeting security forces across northern Nigeria left a trail of dead.

Boko Haram did not claim responsibility for any of the attacks, but all bore their hallmarks, security officials said.

A bomb blast in a residential compound in Maiduguri killed at least one person and seriously wounded four others on Saturday morning, Hassan told Reuters by telephone.

Further west, in northern Kano state, gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in the village of Gaida Saturday, killing one policeman and wounding another, who was rushed to hospital.

Friday morning, a policeman on patrol was shot dead in Kano city, and Thursday militants attacked Kano's airforce secondary school, killing three air force officers and badly wounding a fourth, Air Commodore Ahmed Sani told Reuters.

GROWING THREAT

Nigerian security forces have seemed powerless to contain the growing threat of Islamist militants in the north, who this year struck the capital twice, including a suicide car bomb against the U.N. Nigeria headquarters that killed 26 people.

A wave of crackdowns have achieved little and in some cases their heavy handedness has radicalised the mostly poor, unemployed youths targeted for recruitment by Boko Haram.

Witnesses said a group of around 17 militants drove up in three jeeps during Thursday's attack on the air force school.

"The attackers were chased away by our men. I cannot (say) who are responsible for the attack ... They are criminals carrying arms against their fellow countrymen," Sani said.

Armed men attacked a group playing a boardgames outside in Maiduguri Wednesday, leaving two dead, said witness Simon Bzigu, who escaped the raid which killed his brother.

Boko Haram, whose name translates as "Western education is forbidden" from the local Hausa language, has been blamed for dozens of shootings and attacks with improvised explosive devices this year.

It claimed responsibility for an attack in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe, last month that left at least 65 dead, its deadliest strike to date.

Whether the task is flying a plane, fighting a battle, or caring for a patient, good teamwork is crucial to getting it done right. That's why team-building and training courses are big business in the U.S., and have been for decades. But lately something has changed: "There's a demand for evaluationsan emphasis on showing that team training makes a difference in safety, decision-making, communication, clinical outcomesyou name the ultimate criteria the industry has," says Eduardo Salas, an organizational psychologist at the University of Central Florida.

The answer to that demand is the subject of a new article in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a publication of the Association for Psychological Science. "We are developing a new science to show what works and doesn't work and why," says Salas, who wrote the article with graduate students Marissa L. Shuffler and Deborah Diaz Granados.

A team is not just a machine for doing things; it is a system of social relations. Team training is about instilling knowledge, skills, and attitudesneeded competencies. Team building helps individuals on a team learn to about each other, clarify roles, work through problems, and cooperate toward accomplishing shared goals. Most interventions focus on the latter"team building is the largest human-resources intervention in the world," says Salaseven though it has been found to improve performance little or not at all. "One conclusion we can begin to reach is that maybe both have a place; they are distinct interventions." But organizations rarely do the front-end work of figuring out which they need.

The science of teamwork is young, Salas allows. For one thing, the successes get published, while the failures fade into the ether. And while it's relatively easy to find out if people liked a program or absorbed some of the knowledge it imparted, it's far more complicated to evaluate whether workers have adopted the behaviors they've been trained in or are meeting longer-term goals such as improving safety, decision-making, or patient outcomes. But financial officers are no longer willing to take people off the job and invest millions on team training without some assurance that they'll get what they paid for.

The demand has been invigorating for the science of teamwork, Salas suggests. "Because of the push for results, we are getting better at collecting the data and are making a better case for cause and effect," he says, "I'm a little cautious, but the data are encouraging: We are showing that training produce results."

Breast cancer awareness ads feature superheroes giving ...

"Nobody's immune to breast cancer. When we talk about breast cancer, there's no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor."

A public health campaign for breast cancer awareness in the African country of Mozambique, created by ad firm DDB for Associa??o da Luta Contra o Cancer. Here are the ads: Wonder Woman, Storm, Hulk, Catwoman. From Ads of the World, and more at Copyranter.

There is some controversy in the medical world about the value of breast self-exams. Even if it's not the best way to detect cancer (mammography or thermography can "see" more than your hand, and many if not most lumps that can be felt are benign), I think more awareness and more data is generally a good thing. Even for superheroes.

As an aside, the ads are fun but I'm gonna guess that the creative team on this one was all-male, and possibly the same team that did this previous VERY NSFW campaign for the same organization in Mozambique. Ever notice how public health ads about testicular cancer and prostate cancer don't tend to feature fondle-y sexualized close-ups of those parts?

(thanks, Zapski)

PFT: Steelers' Harrison won't change how he plays

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross speaks during a news conference at the team's training facility in Davie, FloridaReuters

The Dolphins have a problem.? Actually, they have plenty of problems, but the purpose of this article is to focus on one problem in particular.

Owner Stephen Ross doesn?t yet understand many of the nuances of owning an NFL team, and he apparently has no one in his inner circles who is willing or able to point out to him the nuances he has yet to grasp.

The problem rears its head most glaringly when Ross talks to the media.? On one hand, Ross feels justified after years of building a fortune in anonymity to enjoy the fame that comes from diverting some of that fortune to owning an NFL team.? On the other hand, everything he says will shape the manner in which he and the team are perceived by the paying (hopefully) customers.

Last year, the bungling of the courtship of Jim Harbaugh, following by the bungling of the explanation of the bungling of the courtship of Jim Harbaugh, darkened the cloud that still hovers over the franchise.? And now that the team has a chance to create some blue sky, the Dolphins could be bungling it again.

For starters, he blurted out the ?young Don Shula? remark on Monday when explaining the kind of coach for whom the team is searching.? Unless this means that Ross plans to secure a lock of Shula?s hair and commission a team of scientists to create a clone, Ross has instead created a template against which the next coach inevitably will be compared.

In fairness to Ross, it was an off-the-cuff, harmless remark.? In fairness to the franchise he owns, off-the-cuff remarks can operate as tattoos on a team, and those words could now take on a Dream Team-style aura for the Dolphins.? (Moreover, the use of the word ?young? in any hiring context also could cause his employment lawyers to lose 75 percent of the fancy lunches that only the one percent can enjoy.)

Already, the remark has invited skeptics to suggest an answer to the ?Young Don Shula? objective:? Jim Harbaugh.

The comment advances no legitimate interest, so why say it?? The far better approach is to find a coach, hire a coach, and then tell the media and the fans that he?s the coach the team wanted.? Period.

Largely lost in this discussion has been the potential impact of G.M. Jeff Ireland?s ongoing employment upon the coaching search.? For starters, it takes out of the mix any of the A-listers with the options and the leverage to command the power that Ireland will still possess.? There?s a chance that this is one of the nuances that Ross has yet to grasp, and that he could fire Ireland if firing Ireland ultimately is the impediment to hiring, say, Bill Cowher.? There?s also a chance that Ross deliberately has retained Ireland in order to aim for a lower ? and inherently cheaper ? cut of coaching candidates.

The fact that Ireland widely was perceived as betraying coach Tony Sparano by accompanying Ross on the Harbaugh-quest in January will make it even harder to lure coaches who have options.? Many coaches believe Ireland has shown that, in the symbiotic relationship between G.M. and coach, he can?t fully be trusted.? That will make the next coach far more leery about taking the job.

Unless, of course, the ultimate candidate has no other options and simply wants to be an NFL head coach.

Remember, this business is more about entertainment than sports.? People need to be motivated to buy tickets.? In order to be motivated to buy tickets, they need to be inspired by the leadership of the team.? And Ross has done little to inspire anything positive for the fans of the Miami Dolphins.? His best move would be to hire someone who would do the talking for the team, and to otherwise enjoy the non-spotlight trappings of owning an NFL team.

TORONTO (AP) ? BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday that new phones deemed critical to the company's future will be delayed until late 2012.

Mike Lazaridis, one of the company's co-CEOs, said the BlackBerry 10 phones will need a highly integrated chipset that will not be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect them to ship late in the year. He disclosed the delay on a conference call with analysts.

Analysts say RIM's future depends on the new software platform. RIM needs to come up with a compelling BlackBerry as U.S. users have moved on to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software.

Earlier Thursday, RIM said BlackBerry sales will fall sharply in the holiday quarter, providing further evidence that it is struggling to compete. It also has been having a hard time finding a niche in the tablet-computer market, which is dominated by Apple's iPad.

RIM continues to enjoy success overseas, but market researcher NPD Group says RIM's market share of smartphones in the U.S. has declined from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent this year.

The company's stock fell 7 percent in extended trading Thursday.

The delay in BlackBerry 10 phones is the latest in a series of setbacks for the once-iconic Canadian company. Its PlayBook tablet computer hasn't been selling well, forcing the company to sell them at a deep discount. A widespread outage frustrated tens of millions of BlackBerry users in October. RIM fired two executives after their drunken rowdiness forced the diversion of an Air Canada flight. The head of its operations in Indonesia faces charges related to a stampede at a recent promotional sale where dozens of consumers were injured.

RIM said its net income sank 71 percent as revenue fell and the company took a large accounting charge on the PlayBook, which uses the same operating software that RIM's new phones will use.

"We ask for your patience and confidence," Lazaridis said.

RIM earned $265 million, or 51 cents per share, for its fiscal third quarter that ended Nov. 26. That compares with $911 million, or $1.74 per share, a year ago. The company said revenue fell 6 percent to $5.2 billion. The PlayBook charge was $485 million before taxes.

The company shipped 14.1 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter and 150,000 PlayBook tablets, but its fourth-quarter guidance was what investors focused on because it had warned about the third-quarter results earlier.

Although RIM has said it would sell fewer BlackBerrys in the current quarter, the forecast given Thursday appeared worse than expected.

RIM said it would only ship between 11 million and 12 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter compared to 14.8 million in the previous fourth quarter.

RIM also said its fourth-quarter earnings would be in the range of 80 to 95 cents per share on revenue in the range of $4.6 billion to $4.9 billion. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.15 a share on revenue of $5.04 billion, according to FactSet.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said earlier that if RIM reveals that it will ship no more than 12 million BlackBerrys in the current quarter, then the company needs to get its new phones out fast. Otherwise, RIM could lose money in future quarters as it continues to struggle to sell the current, stopgap models.

Misek said late Thursday the BlackBerry 10 phones will now be released three to nine months later than people believed.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said the guidance was terrible and wondered if it was the start of a collapse.

"If consumers abandon this platform it can happen pretty quickly," Gillis said. "Don't think this is the bottom."

Jim Balsillie, the other co-CEO, said the last few quarters have been among the most challenging times in the company's most recent history. He said executives are working to turn it around, but said it may take time.

"We are not satisfied with the performance of the business in the United States," Balsillie said.

Balsillie said he and Lazaridis have reduced their cash salary to $1 per year, though they will continue to earn stock options and other compensation.

RIM's stock fell $1.15 to a new seven-year low of $13.98 in extended trading Thursday after the results were released.

The stock has lost about 75 percent of its value this year. A company that was worth more than $70 billion a few years ago now has a market value of around $8 billion.

"We recognize our shareholders may feel we've fallen short," Balsillie said
