Tampa Bay Restaurant Bulletin | Tampa Commercial Real Estate ...

Fast-casual restaurants gobbling up Tampa Bay market

They don?t serve food in a sack from a drive-through window.

They also don?t have waiters taking orders and delivering dishes tableside.

?Fast-casual? restaurants fill a niche between fast-food and casual dining. Customers order at a counter, and an employee brings their meals to a table. Guests aren?t expected to leave tips.

Nationwide, fast-casual restaurants reflect the fast-growing segment of the food service industry, generating $27 billion in sales last year. Here in the Tampa Bay area, a well-established testing ground for chains, diners eat them up.

?That?s where all the action is right now,? said Nick Vojnovic, president of Little Greek Restaurant chain? Continue reading

NeatCloud

At its heart, NeatCloud is but a file-syncing service, one of many that gives you an allotment of remote storage space to keep some files that are always up-to-date no matter how you access them. But you'd be very short-sighted to see NeatCloud only for its syncing and storing capabilities, as its more important purpose is to help you organize and back up documents, receipts, warranties, and other important paperwork. You can use it to keep records of your valuables and sleep better at night knowing that you'll never be without documentation in the event you have to submit an insurance claim after a theft, fire, flood, or other disaster.

NeatCloud, in partnership with its app NeatMobile (only on iOS at the moment, with Android support reportedly on its way) for uploading information on-the-go, bends to most any needs. Flexible folder structures, simple reporting tools, and a wealth of features for cataloging and categorizing your data and files, keep NeatCloud versatile. The only area where this digital filing cabinet falls short is it doesn't integrate with enterprise-level expense reporting, so it's tough to rely on NeatCloud and NeatMobile for business expenses if you work for a large organization. On the other hand, small business owners may be very well satisfied with NeatCloud's ability to spit out PDF expense reports.

Get Organized

What makes NeatCloud different from more traditional file-syncing services, such as Dropbox and SugarSync (both Editors' Choices) is what you put in them. Most file-syncing services take care of documents that are already on your computer, tablet or smartphone (usually, although there are plenty of alternative uses). NeatCloud is meant to help you create entries or digital records for things that aren't stored anywhere electronically but should be.

Prices and Options
The Neat Company, which owns NeatCloud, offers three versions of the service. The first is Personal ($5.99 per month), which supports one user and does not include Web expense reporting, the ability to share files and folders, or NeatMobile, the mobile app that lets you add new records to your NeatCloud account.

The next version, called Home & Office ($14.99 per month), supports two users and includes all those features that are missing from the Personal edition. The Home & Office version also adds more search capabilities and NeatCare Support. If you sign up for a 30-day free trial of NeatCloud (credit card required), this version is what you'll get.

Last is the NeatCloud Business ($24.99 per month), which has everything in the Home & Office version, but supports up to five users.

Getting Started With NeatCloud
To reach NeatCloud, you can log in through the website, where you'll see a very simple and self-explanatory dashboard (see the slideshow). NeatClouds opens with two buttons along the top, import and report, and three icons in a left rail below: Inbox, My Cabinet, and Trash.

The Inbox is pre-populated with four folders, all of which indicate a different method for uploading documents, such as "From Email," "From NeatMobile," and "From NeatScan," which refers to scanners that The Neat Company also sells (not tested for this review).

The area called My Cabinet houses additional folders and subfolders that you can set up and easily change at any time. I used NeatCloud to catalog my home possessions and homeowner paperwork so that I would have a backup of them in the event of a disaster, and I liked that the Cabinet space gave me complete control and flexibility. I named folders how I wanted and could edit them at the touch of a button, which was crucial in setting up a digital filing cabinet for the first time. Often, you don't know what organizational structure you need until you start making one and revising it, working by trial and error.

When I was ready to populate my folders, I found the Action button on the right side of the dashboard and the option to create item: receipt, document, or contact.

The receipt option is straightforward, with thirteen fields for various bits of relevant information, including vendor, expense category, date, payment type, and even a drop-down menu with tax categories and form names for the U.S. and Canada. It's never a requirement to fill in certain fields, which I appreciated. You can fill in as little or as much as you need, and you can edit the entry later, too.

Russia claims killer demands Pussy Riot freed

FILE - In this Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 file photo, feminist punk group Pussy Riot members, from left, Maria Alekhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova show the court's verdict as they sit in a glass cage at a courtroom in Moscow. The two-year prison sentence handed down to Pussy Riot for a provocative protest inside a Moscow cathedral called attention to just how hard President Vladimir Putin is clamping down on minor displays of dissent. But Russia isn?t the only country where people are punished for offenses that many in the West might consider trivial. (AP Photo/Mikhail Metzel, File)

(AP) ? The bodies of an elderly woman and her daughter were found in Russia beneath a scrawled message demanding freedom for the jailed members of the Pussy Riot band, officials said Thursday.

While a Russian investigator cautioned that the killer was possibly trying to mislead police by drawing attention to the punk provocateurs, the alleged link between a killer and anti-Putin protesters was immediately seized upon by Russian media and pro-Kremlin publicists.

Three members of the band were sentenced this month to two years in prison for a February "punk prayer" performance in Moscow's main cathedral entreating the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, who at the time was on the verge of winning a new term as Russian president.

An official of the Russian Orthodox Church on Thursday said supporters of the band bear a moral responsibility for the gruesome killings in the city of Kazan.

"This blood is on the conscience of the so-called public, which supported the participants in the action in Christ the Savior Cathedral, because the result is that people with unstable mentality got carte-blanche," said Archpriest Dmitry Smirnov, the church's envoy to law enforcement agencies, the Interfax news agency reported.

Some publications ran headlines claiming that Pussy Riot supporters "committed" or "inspired" a double homicide. The coverage was full of the mostly negative terms used by Kremlin-friendly television networks and media in their coverage of the protesters' trial.

The trial, widely seen as Kremlin-orchestrated, caused an international furor, with celebrities such as Paul McCartney urging Russian authorities to free the band.

The jailed band members' attorney said on Twitter that "what happened in Kazan is horrible," calling the case "either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic" case.

"I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot's band name," Nikolai Polozov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the women were mother and daughter, aged 76 and 38, and were killed late last week in their apartment in Kazan with the words "Free Pussy Riot" written on the wall in English, "presumably" with blood.

The substance has not yet been confirmed, it said in the statement. The agency did not provide the women's names or reveal details about their occupations or whether they had any connection to the band.

The Russian tabloid Lifenews quoted an unnamed investigator as saying their faces and bodies were disfigured by multiple stab wounds.

An investigator in Kazan said the murderer was either psychotic or a drug addict who was trying to cover up the crime by attributing it to the band's supporters. The killer "was trying to avoid suspicion" by misleading police, investigator Andrey Sheptitsky said in televised remarks.

That sense of caution was ignored by many Russian media outlets.

Kristina Potupchik, a pro-Putin blogger and former spokeswoman for a militant youth group known for its violent pranks against the opposition and Kremlin critics, said in a post that the band's supporters "will not get away" after the killing.

She also compared them to Charles Manson, whose followers used the blood of murder victims to write on the walls of their houses.

The leader of an Orthodox youth group that has accosted and assaulted Pussy Riot supporters claimed that they are capable of committing "any" crime.

"The infernal force that drives them hates God, believers and humankind in general," Dmitry Tsorionov told Interfax on Thursday. "These people are capable of committing any crime, and nothing but force and law can stop them."

The country's dominant Orthodox Church has called the band's stunt sacrilegious, but hundreds of artists, musicians and other intellectuals have signed petitions urging authorities to free them.

Several wooden crosses that stood outside Orthodox churches in Russia and neighboring Ukraine have been toppled by people who have claimed to be the band's supporters.

The band's manager and the husband of one of the jailed rockers, however, said the band disapproved of the vandalism.

A poll released Thursday by the state-run VTsIOM polling agency showed that one-third of Russians considered the two-year jail sentence for the band members too harsh, while another 31 per cent found it appropriate. The survey questioned 1,600 people nationwide on Aug. 25-26 and gave a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Delivering Customer Service Beyond the Walls of the Enterprise ...

It?s difficult enough to provide a consistently positive customer experience across all business units and departments within the four walls of your company. A quick search on the Web and you will find countless stories of bad customer experiences.? Here is one from Michael Moaz, a Gartner analyst who blogged recently about his frustration experience resolving a glitch with his cable service.

But it?s all the more challenging when you try to do this across a network of business partners, brokers and middlemen. A prime example is the travel and hospitality industries, in which many parties are involved in the process of selling and delivering service.? For example, an airline ticket from an airline that is doing a codeshare with another may be sold by an online vendor such as Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline.?? Another is a branded (such as Marriott, etc.) hotel room being sold through a 3rd party clearinghouse while the actual hotel is an affiliated property operates independently. In these cases, no one company is interacting with the customer 100% of the time and has complete control of the experience being provided.

Unfortunately, I have learned the hard way that the customer experience quickly breaks down when it comes to these extended business networks. Once several companies are involved with a customer transaction, it?s very difficult to coordinate a resolution when an issue arises, and customer service can quickly become an afterthought.

Here?s my story: Earlier this year, my wife bought an airline ticket from a third-party Web site for a summer trip. The ticket was issued by one airline, but she would be on a flight operated by another, via a codeshare arrangement.

Three weeks before her trip, my wife went to check about the baggage policy and noticed that her ticket was marked as ?unconfirmed.? ?Concerned, she called airline #1 (the one operating the actual flight), which explained that her ticket is not confirmed because the issuing airline has failed to do ?something? (it was never fully explained what this ?something? was).? So, she has been placed on the wait list and that she should call the airline (airline #2) issuing the ticket to resolve the issue. When she did so, the service rep assured her that the ticket was confirmed and that she had a seat. ?She asked for a seat assignment but was pointed back to airline #1 because the rep from airline #2 couldn?t access the system of airline #1 to fulfill that request.? She had hit a dead-end.? ?At my suggestion, my wife also called the Web site on which she had purchased the ticket.? After 2 hours of explaining the situation, the rep from the Web site vendor reassured her that the ?unconfirmed? ticket status was a mistake and that she was set to go.

You can only guess what happened when my wife got to the airport: The check-in team would not check her onto the flight, as the operating airline (airline #1) again insisted that my wife?s ticket was unconfirmed.? She remained on the waitlist!

Finally, after much back-and-forth and phone calls to higher-ups and to airline #2, the check-in team reluctantly issued the boarding tickets to my wife ? but not without admonishing her that this was a one-time exception and that she ought to have settled the problem with her ticket before the trip. ??Big favor: Letting a paying customer ? due diligence and all ? on the plane!

With three parties involved, an essential question went unanswered: Who was accountable to the customer? No matter how much any one company is invested in ?customer experience,? once two or three companies are involved, issues quickly fall through the cracks, and no one has accountability or ownership of the customer experience.

I?m not the only one who has encountered this problem this summer; in May, Michael Moaz also blogged about his experience trying to change his travel plans when several companies were involved.

Businesses are likely to continue teaming up in order to succeed in today?s global economy. As that happens, here are a few suggestions for successfully expanding the customer experience beyond the four walls of the enterprise:

  • Determine who ultimately has ownership for customer issues ? for instance, the company making the sale or or the one delivering the service.
  • Define and create processes, systems infrastructure and connections to ensure all partners can share relevant customer information.
  • Provide tools that enable all partners to take necessary actions to service customers.
  • Define service level agreements for each partner and a clear escalation procedures for customers when they have issues.

I hope your vacation plan went smoother than my wife?s.? Please share the ups and down of your customer experiences ? and what you might suggest to businesses that partner with other businesses.

Colombia government seeks peace with FARC rebels

Fernando Vergara / AP

During a televised speech on Monday, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos says that his government had held exploratory talks with rebels of the the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Colombia's government is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, the country's president said on Monday.?

"(W)e have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict,"?President Juan Manuel Santos?said in a televised address from the presidential palace, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.

A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure Santos a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.?

Santos also said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting cease-fire with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.?

He said that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia while talks continued.?Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.?

The president has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.?The last peace effort ended in shambles.?

Colombia 'milestone' as FARC frees captives after over a decade

In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.?

"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.?

"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."?

'People's army'?
The FARC, which calls itself "the people's army" defending peasant rights, has battled about a dozen governments since appearing in 1964, when its founder, Manuel Marulanda, and 48 rebels fought off thousands of troops in jungle hide-outs.?

The group has faced its biggest setbacks in recent years as U.S.-trained special forces use sophisticated technology and spy networks to track the leaders.?

Jaime Saldarriaga / Reuters, file

A member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) runs during a battle with the Colombian army in the mountains of Jambalo, in the province of Cauca, on July 12. Cauca province -- known colloquially to soldiers as Cauca-kistan for the intensity of combat there -- has been one of the hottest regions of the conflict and it is a strategic area for the production and transport of cocaine.

A string of defeats began in 2008 with a cross-border military raid into Ecuador that killed its second in command. Marulanda died of a heart attack weeks later and was replaced by Alfonso Cano, who was later killed too.?

But there has been a recent uptick in violence. Attacks on oil industry installations have jumped 40 percent over the last year, while violent clashes between troops and indigenous protesters led to withering criticism of Santos for not protecting the soldiers.?

Six people were killed, including two children, in a FARC bomb attack in central Meta province on Sunday.

Political future for rebels?
Details of the talks are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in Cuba or Norway. President Barack Obama is aware of the process and is in agreement, the Reuters source said.?

According to Colombian newspaper El Espectador, among the central issues going into the talks will be whether the FARC will be granted a political role, whether lands lost during the fighting will be returned to farmers, whether the rebels will lay down their arms, and whether rebel leaders will be subject to extradition.

Notorious druglord arrested, headed to US?

In 1988 former President Andres Pastrana ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of Switzerland to promote talks. The rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments, and set up prison camps to hold its hostages.?

A Colombian intelligence source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.?

(Link to Spanish-language article in El Espectador)

Colombia's congress passed a constitutional reform in June that set the legal basis for eventual peace with the rebels. The reform prohibits guerrilla leaders accused of crimes against humanity from holding political office.?

Guarded hope
News of the latest peace effort was met with guarded hope among Colombians.?

"Honestly, full peace is probably never possible. Of course it would be good ... but really, an end to the war? I think an end to the world will happen first," said Maria Eugenia Martinez as she sold cigarettes in an upscale Bogota neighborhood.?

Colombians dismantle police post in protest at FARC clashes

Santos discussed the peace process during talks in Havana with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro before the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia earlier this year, the intelligence source said.?

In a recent interview with Reuters, Santos said he would only start a peace process "with a high probability of success. I would not start a process to fail."?

News of the talks had already angered Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who has slammed Santos for wanting "peace at any cost" and allowing the rebels to rearm and regroup.?

Explosion in Bogota kills at least two and injures former interior minister

Santos, a former defense minister, won election in 2010 by a landslide, pledging to cut unemployment and continue Uribe's hard line security policies, while fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.?

While much of the world struggles to shore up fiscal accounts, Colombia's financial management, buoyant economy and security advances have helped shield its economy from too much fallout from the international financial crisis.?

Once an outcast for most foreign companies, the Andean nation has become a magnet for investment as a U.S.-backed offensive against the FARC sharply reduced the number of kidnappings and murders. The nation was rewarded last year with an investment grade from three major credit-rating agencies.?

How much should you learn about investing? | This user's experience

Many years ago, I learned the fundamentals of investing, and over two decades of consistently following them, confirmed that (at least for me) they worked exactly as advertised.

Over the years, though, a questions I?ve asked myself many times is how much investing knowledge should the average person have? Have I learned more than necessary? Have I not learned enough? I personally went a bit beyond the basics in my own studies, but not nearly as far as someone like John Norstad, who started with first mathematic principles.

Recently, I was excited to learn that one of my favorite financial authors, William Bernstein, has begun a series of short-format ebooks entitled Investing for Adults, in which he delves deeper into investing topics, and assumes that the reader has at least some familiarity with academic finance.

His first release, The Ages of the Investor: A Critical Look at Live-cycle Investing discusses how to view and treat investing at various phases of one?s lifetime. For each phase ? beginning, middle & end ? he discusses approaches and trade-offs, and refers to the latest in academic research. I very much enjoyed reading the book.

Some interesting notes I took, on topics beyond the basics:

  • Considering a person?s total capital over time ? i.e. the sum of human capital (their future ability to earn) along with invested capital (their savings) ? an argument can be made that it?s nearly impossible for a young person to take on too much investment risk.

  • Research would suggest young people take on as much as 100% leverage in stock investment. But, there are a lot of practical problems with this.

  • The sequence of market turns matters. A run of bad markets at the end of a career, is worse than a run at the beginning. Lump-sum investing mitigates this risk, but over the long term is riskier than sequential, periodic investing.

  • The decision of whether a retiree should annuitize their savings, or drawdown on an investment portfolio is not an easy one, as there risks on all sides.

  • The decision of when to transition from middle-age investing to retirement investing is probably the most difficult of all.

As I started reading the book, I wondered whether, armed with the very latest in research, I?d end up changing my basic investment approach. I was happy, and intrigued, to find that I wouldn?t.

My conclusion is that in the long-term, the results of investing are so sensitive to uncontrollable factors, that the outcome to be expected from devising sophisticated strategies isn?t likely to be significantly better than that expected from simple strategies, like those I teach in my new book, Money for Something.

And that?s good news ? that the majority of the benefits of investing are accessible to everybody, without needing a degree in finance.

Summarizing the basic, important points:

  • It should be a top priority for everbody?and particularly young people?to save as much as they can. The importance can not be overstated.

  • If you leave your savings in the bank, the value will, over time, become decimated by inflation. Therefore, we should all have an interest in storing our savings in something that has a good chance of at least preserving its value over time.

  • The effects of compounding are astounding. Compounding works for us and can be life-changing (in the case of long term, positive-return investments) and works against us (in the case of inflation and costs associated with investing). We should therefore try to capture the growth offered by investment markets, and we should try to minimize the costs of our investments.

  • We should always consider our savings in terms of the income they can generate.

  • Everybody should learn the basics.

Choosing a Foundation Repair Company in Toms River

Sometimes, the foundation of your home can start cracking, sinking, or show other signs of damage. The walls might begin to bend and bow or crawl spaces can sink leading to uneven floors. In such cases, prompt action to strengthen the foundation is essential to reduce long-term damage to your home. It is important to choose an expert foundation repair company in Toms River to both ensure correct remedial measures and to save money. Some contractors recommend changing the foundation but this is time consuming, disruptive, expensive, and does not prevent the issue from recurring.

Advantages of Foundation Repair
Unlike laying a fresh foundation, foundation repair in Camden, NJ, will involve an expert contractor for only a week (some jobs vary though in complexity). Of course they can provide a more accurate assessment before commencing. Also, it is less disruptive and costs less than relaying an entire new foundation. Moreover, foundation repair experts address the cause of the damaged foundation and eliminate it, ensuring that the problem will not reoccur.

Causes of Foundation Damage
Before you make a possible repair decision, you need to understand the causes of the damage to the foundation. When the foundation is located in clay soil, the clay expands when it absorbs water. This exerts more pressure on the foundation walls, which then buckle under it. Even a new foundation will experience the same pressure and the problem will recur. Experts in foundation repair at Toms River will use patented technology designed to overcome this issue. They will install corrosion-resistant, waterproof products that will strengthen the foundation and straighten bowing walls over time. The expert contractors will ensure that there is minimal disruption to your schedule.

What to Look for in a Foundation Repair Contractor?
Once you have decided on foundation repair, you need to select a genuine contractor. You should look for a foundation repair contractor in Camden, NJ, who has the backing of a national or international company. The products and training provided by this proven international business will ensure the quality is up to your measure and industry standards, while a local contractor will be available to address your queries and have proper references. You should pick a contractor that agrees to clean up after the job is done and relays your grass and generally tries to restore your basement and garden to its previous clean state before saying mission is accomplished.

A foundation expert will use products with genuine warranties. They should have a competent and trained staff to advise you on all your foundation problems. An assessor should be first sent to examine your home and the damage and provide you with a free quote. Some small businesses though, or any business for that matter, may not issue a free quote ? not with gas prices and employee costs being considered.

The contractor should have the expertise and products to handle all your foundation problems. In case parts of your floor sag because of sagging crawl spaces, the foundation professional will possess the appropriate products to deal with this issue, or know someone that does. Also, such products should take into account future height adjustments, since the earth under the crawl space might continue to settle or sink.

An Experienced Business Professional
By choosing a local contractor with a record for reliability, you will be ensuring that the foundation repair company in Toms River you have picked to work on your home will come through for you. A company with the necessary acumen that has in-house (some businesses could contract out for this) structural and geotechnical engineer (perhaps not necessary for all jobs) who has studied the issue of foundation damage in depth will have products to address all the challenges your home poses. They should have already encountered and dealt with similar problems and will have the right solution to deal with your damaged foundation.

Tropical Storm Isaac is already hitting the Florida Keys with rain and wind, and it could become an even stronger hurricane as it makes its way toward the northern Gulf Coast.

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

Party officials are trying to cram four days of convention events and festivities into three as Isaac approaches. The storm is not expected to directly hit Tampa, but those in attendance ? and especially those protesting outside ? can expect to get wet.

DAMAGE

Most of the damage down by Isaac so far has been in the Caribbean. At least seven people were killed by flooding in Haiti, including in tent cities filled with earthquake victims. Isaac scraped Cuba, downing power lines and trees. As of early Sunday afternoon, the storm was just beginning to hit the Florida Keys and had done little damage aside from scattered power outages.

WHERE WILL IT HIT?

On Sunday afternoon, Isaac is expected to pass over the Florida Keys. From there, it will hit somewhere along the northern Gulf Coast.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center have warned that right now, it's extremely difficult to determine exactly where on the Gulf Coast Isaac will make a direct hit. But it is expected to gain significant strength over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and is likely to become at least a Category 2 storm. And it is a massive system: Tropical storm conditions extend as far as 200 miles from the center, meaning even communities not in the direct path could get a lashing.

HBT: Orioles acquire Saunders from D-backs

As first reported by CBS Sports? Jon Heyman, the Orioles have acquired lefty starter Joe Saunders in a waiver trade from Arizona. Matt Lindstrom, a right-handed reliever, is headed to the Diamondbacks in return along with a player to be named later.

Saunders passed through waivers on Friday and was at that point eligible to be dealt to any team. The 31-year-old has posted a decent 4.22 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 130 innings this season, but the D?Backs have a number of young arms in their system and did well to land a reliable setup man in their return?package from the O?s.

Lindstrom, 32, registered a 2.72 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 36 1/3 innings this year for Baltimore.

Saunders will be eligible for free agency this offseason. He?s earning $6 million in his final year of?arbitration.

GOP convention protesters: storms won't stop them

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under wet skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump even heavier rains on Tampa won't stop them from trying to get out their message that America's middle class is in trouble and needs to be restored.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" were melting on a warm, sticky, rainy day. Occupy protesters it represents the melting away of the middle class.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, in the city of some 25,000 people. They say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy protesters are often made up of younger people who generally believe the financial system is stacked against the majority. But in Tampa, many older people joined the marchers.

They included Gaurapp and Landecker, who said that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

For months, protesters were gearing up for scores of people to converge on Tampa the day before the convention began to showcase their laundry list of beefs and key messages. The groups included organized labor and Occupy Wall Street.

Neither protesters nor the GOP, however, could foresee Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with winds, rain and maybe some flooding on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

The protests stayed small by mid-afternoon. And not all had the same message.

Some came to oppose just Mitt Romney, who officially will become the Republican nominee for president on Thursday. Others didn't seem to care for Romney nor President Barack Obama. And though jobs and wealth were strong messages, others had different agendas.

About 30 people, many with dogs, held a rally against Romney, who infamously strapped his dog in a crate to the top of his car on a family vacation years ago.

"If somebody is going to treat their animal inhumanely, how are they going to treat our country?" said Kim Swygert, 37, a law student from Tampa, who came with her Great Dane.

"He strapped his dog to the top of the car because he crapped, excuse my French," she said.

Several carried anti-Romney signs including one that read, "Don't roof rack me, bro."

The weather didn't deter 52 year-old Donald Butner. He says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

Many protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America.

The 54-year-old Landecker spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.
