Former GOP chairman continues apartment renovations

FORSYTH CO., N.C. ? Nathan Tabor, the former chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party and a former candidate for Congress, is creating a name for himself in Winston-Salem as a developer and renovator of downtrodden properties.

Tabor now owns 350 units in Forsyth County and about 50 in Guilford County. He is in the process of buying other apartment complexes in the area, as well.

The latest Tabor acquisition, Burke Village apartment complex ? recently recommended for demolition ? is about to get a $1.4 million makeover, said Tabor, who is becoming part-owner of the complex on New Hope Lane between Liberty and Cleveland streets in northeastern Winston-Salem.

Court records show that in 2012, units in some of the other complexes that Tabor owns were tagged for improper housing conditions, but Tabor says he fixes problems that come to his attention.

?I take rundown properties and turn them around,? Tabor said. ?Are they perfect? No. Do we respond immediately to issues? Yes.?

A company owned by Tabor and another company owned by Bob Crumley of Greensboro, the former sole owner of Burke Village, are joining forces to own the Burke Village complex, which will be renamed New Hope Manor Apartments.
