Bedard: Five crucial matchups for Giants-Eagles

Philly will try to keep Vick upright, but N.Y. must contain McCoy, among others

ANALYSIS

As NFC East rivals, the Giants and Eagles are certainly very familiar with each other.

But this Eagles team is much different than the version the Giants saw last season in Week 3 (Giants won 29-16) and Week 11 (Eagles won 17-10).

In the first meeting last season, the Eagles? defense under new coordinator Juan Castillo was very much in flux. The struggles on that side contributed to Philadelphia starting the season 1-4 and then 4-8. In the second meeting, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was injured and Vince Young led Philadelphia to victory.

So while the teams know each other well, the Giants have more to adjust to this time around. The Eagles know what they?re getting from the Giants. The personnel may have changed a little bit, but with Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell directing the offense and defense, respectively, Philadelphia can gameplan with a little more certainty.

But, as always, the matchups will tell the tale in the Sunday Night Football game. After going over the tape, here are the five most crucial aspects of the matchups between the Eagles and Giants:

Limiting Victor Cruz
No one knew who Giants receiver Victor Cruz was in the first two weeks of the 2011 season when he had two catches for 17 yards. Cruz set the stage for his breakout season in Week 3 against the Eagles when he had three catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns, including an electrifying 74-yard score. In the Week 11 matchup, Cruz was even better with six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles had problems against Cruz because the Giants like to move him around a lot. That was also a problem for Philadelphia last week against the Cardinals when Larry Fitzgerald had nine catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. Cruz and Fitzgerald are different players physically, but their teams use them in similar fashion. The Eagles are simply going to have to figure out a better way to do with those types of players.

When Cruz is lined up on the left side, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha can handle him. It?s elsewhere that is the problem. The best option would likely be to matchup Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who is physical and athletic, against Cruz. Rookie nickel back Brandon Boykin would seem to be overmatched against Cruz. You can bet Gilbride will be designing ways to get Boykin into coverage against Cruz, but the Eagles will need to have answer for it. Expect Philadelphia to use some sort of bracket coverage against Cruz with help from linebackers or a safety.

Slowing the Eagles' pass rush
Philadelphia is really starting to click with four-man rush, which stars Jason Babin (2.5 sacks) at left end, and Trent Cole (1.5 sacks) on the right side. The Eagles use a heavy line rotation, so backups Darryl Tapp and Brandon Graham will also get their snaps. The Giants have to feel good that left tackle Williams Beatty has returned to the lineup and played well. That has allowed Sean Locklear to go back to the right side, where his skills fit better. The Giants use a lot of sets that involved multiple tight ends and running backs, so they will be asked to help on the edges against the ends.

Where the Eagles might have an edge is up the middle. Starting defensive tackles Derek Landri and Cullen Jenkins are very disruptive and are more physical than the interior Giants line of left guard Kevin Boothe, center David Baas and right guard Chris Snee. Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton are the rotation guys at tackle for the Eagles, who run a nine-man line rotation to keep players fresh.

Giants' secondary on the spot
Giants safety Antrel Rolle (knee laceration) isn?t a sure thing to play, but it?s likely he?s out there. But with right cornerbacks Jayron Hosley and Michael Coe dealing with hamstring injuries, that means third-stringer Prince Amukamara will be starting for the Giants. He has yet to live up to his 2011 first-round draft status, so expect the Eagles to go after him. Amukamara played well in the Thursday night blowout victory over the Panthers, but the Eagles are more dangerous with receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul vs. Eagles LT Demetress Bell
Everyone knows how lethal the Giants? pass rush is, and that should certainly continue against an Eagles line that allows a ton of pressure. Vick brings on some of the issues himself with indecisiveness and holding onto to the ball too long, but the Eagles will need to play well up front to win.

Bell has the toughest job against exquisite end Jason Pierre-Paul, who has 1.5 sacks and about a dozen other quarterback pressure so far this season. This is a matchup where not having starting left tackle Jason Peters (ruptured Achilles) really hurts. The Eagles are going to have to help Bell against Pierre-Paul, or Vick is going to running the entire game.

Eagles RB LeSean McCoy vs. Giants DE Osi Umenyiora
These two have had a well-publicized battle of verbal and Twitter shots for some time, so there?s a little extra fuel on the fire. The latest installment of this feud came last week when McCoy called Umenyiora ?a ballerina in a Giants uniform? during an ESPN interview. Umenyiora has called McCoy ?Lady Gaga? in the past, and even wished him a happy Mother?s Day.

Most of it is in good fun among rivals, but the Giants know they have to be serious about stopping McCoy, last season?s All-Pro running back, if they want to win. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in three of his six career games against the Giants. To limit a shifty, cut-back runner like McCoy, the Giants are going to have to be sound in their gaps and run fits, and not just on the defensive line. Linebackers Mathias Kiwanuka (strong side), Chase Blackburn (middle) and Michael Boley (weak) will need to be disciplined.

Complicating things are the motions with Jackson, and the play-action bootlegs the Eagles like to use with Vick. If the linebackers are fooled by any of the play fakes, that will leave McCoy amble room to gash the Giants on the backside.?

Implementing Article 30.5: The Right to Sport for All Persons with ...

On Friday, September 14, 2012, a side-event panel was held during the 5th Conference of State Parties for the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The panel focused on the implementation of Article 30.5 of the UNCRPD, which guarantees the right to sport, recreation, and play for all persons with disabilities. Representatives from the Paralympics, Deaflympics, Special Olympics, and the UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) spoke about current initiatives to support the implementation of Article 30.5 as well as areas where progress still needs to be made.

Eli Wolff of Brown University, and program director of the Inclusive Sports Initiative for the Institute of Human Centered Design, moderated the event. Panelists included Eric Dienes, Liaison Officer for the UNOSDP, Ann Cody, Governing Board Member for the International Paralympic Committee, Craig Crowley, President of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, and Kristin Hughes, Senior Manager of Communications of Special Olympics International. Ann Cody, Craig Crowley, and Kristin Hughes all noted significant increases in participation in their respective sports programs over the past few years. Ms. Cody also pointed to the increase in participation of female athletes in the Paralympics, which has more than doubled over the past 10 years to 1,513 participants.

Panelists also discussed some of their local-level initiatives that were being conducted around the world to promote access to sport for people with disabilities. The UNOSDP, whose goal is to use sport to promote the millennium development goals and other development initiatives, has established the promotion of the right to sport for persons with disabilities as one of its five priorities. The organization has mandated the inclusion of persons with disabilities in its Youth Leadership Camps, which provides select youth from around the world with sport for development training. According to Mr. Dienes, ?We bring these young men and women together to further develop their skills in project development and leadership so that they can strengthen their communities.? Ann Cody discussed the IPC?s sport-specific junior programs that increase access to sports for people with disabilities below the age of 25. Special Olympics has also focused on grassroots efforts to increase access to sports for people with intellectual disabilities. There are currently four million Special Olympics athletes around the world and over 50,000 competitions took place in 2011 alone. Special Olympics also uses their sports program to reach the Millennium Development Goals by promoting social inclusion and providing health screenings, health education, self-advocacy training to athletes.

While these initiatives demonstrate that opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport are growing, all of the panelists asserted that more work needed to be done to reach parity in access. The UNOSDP coordinates the International Working Group on Sport for Development and Peace and one of the five thematic working groups is sport for persons with disabilities. This group remains inactive due to a lack of leadership by member states. Mr. Dienes called on member states to step forward to activate this group. Mr. Crowley asserted that the Deaflympics, which addresses the specific communication needs of deaf individuals, needs further acknowledgement in both the disability community and the greater sporting community. All panelists mentioned that, while programs have grown tremendously in the past decade, a large population is still not being reached. Kristin Hughes noted that, while Special Olympics reaches 4 million people with intellectual disabilities, that constitutes only 2% of the global population of 200 million people with intellectual disabilities.?

The panel introduced areas where progress is being made for people with disabilities, but also highlighted that there is much room for improvement in the fields of policy, participation, and media coverage. Despite being affirmed as a human right by the UNCRPD, people with disabilities have yet to achieve parity with their non-disabled peers in access to sport. The power of sports participation for self-efficacy, self-esteem, and social inclusion makes sports participation all the more necessary for people with disabilities. As Dr. Ted Fay, Senior Research Fellow with the Institute for Human Centered Design and Professor of Sport Management at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland, concluded, ?Many of us, personally or in advocacy for others, have witnessed shame and the destruction of life based on a person's identity group.? We will no longer accept any excuses.? We are coming from a cloak of shame to a future of fame! ?

CT scanner buy part of Myanmar health upgrade - Sun Herald

? Myanmar has contracted to buy more than two dozen CT scan machines as an increased budget and easing of Western sanctions allows it to upgrade its ailing public health system.

The local agent for General Electric's health care division, Win Zaw Aung, said Saturday that the health ministry will buy 22 CT scan machines and four CT simulators for training, according to the results of a recent tender.

GE announced Thursday that it has contracted to sell seven CT machines for use in public hospitals in Yangon and other cities in a deal worth about $5 million.

Myanmar's health care system was considered among the region's worst under the previous military government, whose own leaders would fly to Singapore for critical medical care. A reformist elected government that took power last year has increased the health budget fourfold for the 2012-13 fiscal year.

The political and economic reform measures undertaken by the government of President Thein Sein are intended to revive a moribund economy after five decades of repressive military rule that estranged Myanmar from many Western nations.

Thein Sein's political reforms, including reconciliation with democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, have convinced Western nations to lift most of the sanctions they had imposed against the previous military government.

In the case of the United States, this allowed companies such as GE that had been banned from doing most business in Myannar to re-enter the market. GE announced that it has already sold two CT scan units to private hospitals in Myanmar since sanctions were eased.

Browns wide receiver Greg Little cannot hang onto a pass as Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb breaks up the pass in the fourth quarter during their NFL game in BaltimoreReuters

The Browns aren?t happy about the failure of receiver Greg Little to catch the football.? But the reality is that, unless and until they have a better option, they?ve got no choice but to work with him.

And so they will.

?We had some drops,? coach Pat Shurmur said after Thursday night?s loss to the Ravens, which included seven drops by the Browns receivers, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.? ?Not acceptable.? There?s zero tolerance for that.? I will say this: We have some tough guys out there playing that are not catching the ball efficiently enough, and we just need to keep working with them.? That?s the reality of it.?

Of course, that?s not what ?zero tolerance? means.

But with zero options, zero tolerance can?t be applied as defined.? And so, despite the tough talk, the Browns will have to try to help Little finish the job.

?Great receivers make great catches,? Little said, adding that quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple told Little after dropping a potential touchdown catch that the second-year receiver would still ?get a chance to pull out your big driver.?

Again, that?s not zero tolerance.? It?s arguably the exact opposite of it.

Either way, the Browns need the exact opposite of what they have been getting from Little.

(AP) ? The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history ? a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed further light on the discreet, internal workings of the papal household.

In its first hearing in the case, the three-judge Vatican tribunal threw out some evidence gathered during the investigation of butler Paolo Gabriele, who is charged with aggravated theft. It also decided to separate Gabriele's trial from that of his co-defendant, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Gabriele is accused of taking the pope's correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI," was published to great fanfare in May.

Prosecutors have said Gabriele confessed to taking the documents because he wanted to expose the "evil and corruption" in the church. They quoted him as saying during an interrogation that he felt inspired by the Holy Spirit to inform the pope about the church's problems and that a "shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the church back on the right track."

Nuzzi on Saturday wished Gabriele well, tweeting "Good Luck, courageous Paoletto, we're with you." He referred to Gabriele by the diminutive nickname used by the pope and other members of the papal household.

The trial inside the intimate, austere courtroom was the highest-profile case to come before the Vatican judiciary since the 1929 founding of the Vatican city state, the world's smallest sovereign state. Media from around the world converged on St. Peter's Square to cover the case, which has attracted attention not so much because of the content of the documents but because they were stolen from the pope's desk and leaked, allegedly by one of Benedict's closest assistants.

On Saturday, the court said the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, had been called as a witness, testimony that is sure to attract attention given that Gaenswein rarely speaks in public much less about the details of the tight-knit papal family of which Gabriele formed part.

Other witnesses include one of the four consecrated women who take care of the pope's apartment, a monsignor in the Vatican secretary of state, the No. 2 Swiss Guard commander and the head of the Vatican police force.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre set the next hearing for Tuesday, when Gabriele will be questioned. He said he thought the whole trial could be wrapped up in four more hearings.

Gabriele faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. He has already asked to be pardoned by the pope, something most Vatican watchers say is a given.

Gabriele, 46, appeared calm but tense during the 2 hour, 15 minute hearing, frequently crossing his hands or clasping them in his lap. He wore a light gray suit and tie.

He sat alone on a bench on one side of the courtroom, following the proceedings impassively. During a break in the hearing, he chatted with his attorney, Cristiana Arru, and greeted journalists with a nod and a smile as he entered and exited.

Arru raised a series of objections at the start of the hearing, only some of which were accepted by the court. One concerned two jailhouse conversations Gabriele had with the head of the Vatican police force without his lawyers present. The judges declared both inadmissible. The content isn't public.

Arru also sought access to the report of a commission of cardinals appointed by the pope to investigate the leaks alongside Vatican magistrates. The court denied the request.

The attorney for co-defendant Claudio Sciarpelletti successfully petitioned to have his client's trial separated from that of Gabriele. Sciarpelletti wasn't in the court Saturday and his trial date wasn't set.

Neither Gabriele's wife nor any of his three children attended the hearing. Space for the public was limited; eight of the 18 seats were taken up by the journalists who followed the proceedings and then briefed the rest of the Vatican press corps afterward.

The courtroom itself was spare, with wood paneling along the walls, a gilded crest of the Holy See in the ceiling, a photograph of Benedict over the prosecutor's chair and a crucifix over the chair of the presiding judge. It's located in a four-story palazzo tucked behind St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican gardens.

Security was relaxed, with the guards at the tribunal entrance mostly concerned that none of the press or public brought in any recording devices: They even checked pens to make sure they couldn't record, and sequestered cell phones into safe boxes. No television or still cameras were allowed, except for Vatican media which filmed the first moments at the start of the hearing.

Given the content of the leaks and the Vatican's penchant for secrecy, the fact that the trial was open to the public and media might seem unusual. In fact, such trials in the Vatican's civil and penal tribunal are routinely public. They just don't happen very often or attract much attention. The Vatican's ecclesial courts on the other hand, which handle marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other matters of church law, remain firmly off-limits to outsiders.

In some ways, the willingness of the Vatican to proceed with the trial at all is an indication of its efforts to show new transparency in its inner workings. Benedict could have pardoned Gabriele as soon as he was arrested or charged, precluding any trial from getting off the ground. Instead he allowed the trial to go ahead, evidence of the "courage" the Vatican is showing to be more transparent, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has said.

He called such transparency unprecedented for the Vatican and likened it to the Holy See's recent decision to submit its financial institutions to outside scrutiny by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Curl Your Bacon Before Baking for Crispy Bacon Tubes [Friday Fun]

Curl Your Bacon Before Baking for Crispy Bacon Tubes You may know that baking bacon is a great way to cook it up quickly and evenly, but for a little fun and flavor, the next time you bake it, why not season your bacon and twist it into spirals before baking? It should hold its shape while cooking, and when it comes out you'll have curly bacon straws?much more interesting than simple strips.

Over at The Wicked Noodle, in between professing her love for bacon and this tip, the author suggests spicing up your bacon with brown sugar and chipotle powder to give it a spicy-sweet kick. If you curl the bacon this way, that flavor will really stay with the end result, since it'll be on the inside while the bacon is cooking. She also notes that thicker cuts may be a problem here, so you might want to use an oven-safe skewer to twist the bacon around if you're using particularly thick strips. Even if you don't candy or spice up the bacon, it's a neat trick?not that we really need tricks to enjoy bacon.

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? NFL referees are ready to go unnoticed again, just as they prefer.

The refs approved a new eight-year contract with the league by a 112-5 vote Saturday, officially ending a lockout that led to three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew the attention of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

After a few hours of final preparations with league officials, the next stop for the referees will be the airport. Most will be heading straight to their Sunday game sites.

"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place. Before long, they expect to go back to being mostly anonymous and sometimes hated. They're OK with both.

"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" Green said. "That's how we like to work."

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night. Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

Funding Neglected Disease R&D Beneficial To Europe, Developing ...

By Kaiser GH Update

In this bulletin from Science Business, Karen Hoehn, vice executive director and director of international affairs at the German Foundation for World Population, highlights ?a study by the independent research group Policy Cures, ?Saving Lives and Creating Impact: E.U. Investment in Poverty-Related and Neglected Disease,?? which she says ?confirms that European funding for global health research and development [R&D] through the new E.U. Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, will have a direct benefit on both developing countries and on Europe.? She writes that R&D funding for poverty-related and neglected diseases helps create jobs, discover new treatments, and ?generates a net benefit to Europe?s economy.? Hoehn notes that ?[a]ll E.U. funding for research and development into poverty-related and neglected diseases will be coordinated through Horizon 2020,? and adds, ?Cutting global health funding in Horizon 2020 would be detrimental to the European economy, as well as to developing countries? GNOME 36 launchesThe third update to the third version of Gnome may send numerologists to their calendars, but we're not that way inclined. Instead, the latest bump to the software adds a new Boxes application, a new notification system and an activities overview. It's also chucking in improved accessibility support in addition to the usual raft of tweaks and bug fixes you'd expect from an update like this. It'll be available from your own vendor (or distribution) soon, or you can pick up a live image from the official site straight away.

Outsourcing, China and the Presidential Campaign | Economy In ...

chineseimports

In speeches and television ads, President Obama and Governor Romney each?claims they would do a better standing up for American workers against unfair? trade with China. However, when it comes to outsourcing both have sins to? repent.

Just about everyone who has had a choice between buying an American-made? product or an import?a car, dress or bottle of wine?must admit that? international trade based on national differences in know how, labor costs and?natural resources can help us all live better.

If Americans expect folks to sell Boeing aircraft and Microsoft Windows? abroad, then they must be prepared to outsource some of what they buy directly,? or through firms assembling products here.

The problem is not outsourcing but importing products that could be made as?or more inexpensively in the United States. That happens when: U.S. policy? throws up unnecessary barriers to domestic business; foreign governments? subsidize inefficient production, or simply keep out competitive American? products; or U.S. firms have an inappropriate bias toward foreign sourcing.

Those swell the trade deficit, which imposes great costs, and both President? Obama and Governor Romney each share some guilt.

President Obama?s tough restrictions on oil and gas development in the Gulf,? off the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and in Alaska do not reduce U.S. petroleum? consumption but merely shift exploration and production to costlier and riskier? locations abroad. EPA limits on CO2 emissions encourage manufacturers to locate? in China, where similar regulations do not apply. Both kill U.S. jobs without an? environmental benefit.

China keeps its products artificially cheap, and encourages U.S.? manufacturers to locate production in the Middle Kingdom by suppressing the? value of its currency, imposing high tariffs and throwing up administrative? barriers to US goods and services.
In the wake of the financial crisis,? Beijing required that its stimulus money to be spent in China, and yet President? Obama permitted billions of US stimulus money to be spent in China? and elsewhere.

For example, GE, whose CEO heads the President?s Job?s Council, used stimulus? grants to purchase components for U.S. wind turbines from the Chengxi Shipyard?a? state controlled company that builds vessels for the Chinese Navy?even though an? American supplier offered to match its price.

President Obama could have excluded those products?either through the initial? legislation or by executive order?without violating WTO rules but chose not to? do so. More broadly, he has not taken aim at China?s undervalued currency,? which affords exporters as much as a 40 percent price advantage when selling in? the United States.

Bain Capital, the firm founded by Governor Romney, has invested in companies? that have relocated jobs to China. More broadly private equity firms have an? inherent bias toward outsourcing that is often neither helpful to the businesses? they reorganize nor healthy for the U.S. economy.

Essentially, private equity purchases distressed businesses, and looks for? quick profits by slashing wasteful employment?unnecessary jobs that would be? lost anyway if the firms failed?and replacing ossified management. However,? seeking big returns in a brief period, private equity managers are more likely? to sell off valuable brands and patents to raise quick cash, and to offshore? manufacturing that supports domestic R&D and could contribute greatly to the? future value of the firm and broader U.S. competitiveness and employment.

US tax policies offer substantial incentives to private equity reorganization? of businesses by taxing their partners? income at about half the rate that many? corporations, small businesses and professionals pay. Simply, those tax breaks? give the economy more private equity reorganizations than are good for U.S.? growth and jobs creation.

Unnecessary outsourcing is responsible for at least half the $600 billion? U.S. trade deficit. Slashing that deficit in half would boost domestic demand? and GDP by about $500 billion and add 5 million jobs.

Export and import-competing industries spend at least four times as much on? R&D as the private business sector as a whole. Reducing outsourcing, by? increasing R&D, could boost U.S. GDP by one or two percentage points. A US? economy growing at 3 or 4 percent a year, instead of its current 2 percent,? would have far fewer budget problems at the federal and state levels, and far? more resources to address issues like health care, the solvency of social? security and finance an adequate national defense and space exploration.

Grieving Pet Owners Want Imported Dog Treats Pulled From Shelves

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi. Rita Desollar

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi.

The Food and Drug Administration isn't sure, but Rita Desollar of Pekin, Ill., feels she knows what killed Heidi, her 7-year-old German shepherd. She feels it was the chicken jerky strips she bought at her local Walgreen's.

Desollar says on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, she gave two pieces of Waggin' Train jerky to Heidi as a treat. A few days later, Heidi was throwing up and "in a lot of distress," she says. By the time the holiday rolled around on Monday, Desollar says, Heidi was convulsing in her bed. She died that day, before Desollar could even take her to the vet.

"I didn't know what happened or why," she tells The Salt. "I got on the Internet and I typed into Google 'What killed my dog?' What came up took my breath away."

?

Desollar found dozens of posts on various websites from people who claim their dogs got sick from eating the same types of chicken jerky treats - all of them imported from China. She also discovered that the FDA was conducting an active investigation into these treats, but the agency has not found any direct evidence that the treats are causing a problem, so it has not issued any recalls. It has issued three warnings to consumers about the products, most recently in November of last year.

There haven't been recalls because the FDA hasn't officially concluded that there's anything wrong with these imported pet treats. Though it has received more than 2,000 complaints about them in the past five years, the FDA's tests haven't turned up any contaminant or adulterant in the treats that would give it a reason to issue a mandatory recall. However, the agency has posted some questions and answers about its investigation of the treats.

The FDA didn't respond to our inquiries, but an FDA official recently told a conference of veterinarians that concerns about the treats might be overblown.

"Two thousand complaints since 2007 is an incredibly small subset of the 15 million animals estimated to consume these treats," Dr. Tracy DuVernoy, with the FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation Network, said last month.

DuVernoy didn't rule out a contamination. But she told the veterinarians that, if there is something wrong with the dog treats, it's something the FDA's scientists haven't been able to pin down. "Since a lot has been ruled out," she said, "it might be a very intricate sort of biological response."

DuVernoy was quoted in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association's web coverage of the conference.

The Waggin' Train company says its treats are safe. "The FDA has been looking at this since 2007 and they've been very clear that they haven't found any contaminant," says Keith Schopp, a spokesman for the brand.

While the FDA waits and conducts more testing, Desollar doesn't want retailers to wait. A few weeks ago, she created an online petition demanding that Walgreen's, Walmart, Kroger and other retailers yank the treats off their shelves. Within less than a month, the petition has garnered more than 60,000 signatures.

We contacted several of the retailers on Desollar's list. They said they're waiting to take action until the FDA comes to an official conclusion about whether the pet treats are safe or not.

But Desollar says, at the very least, the stores should give their customers full information about what's already happened.

"Just tell me it's under FDA investigation," she says. "I'll make the decision."

Gaming In The Cloud Is Great News For Players, If The Industry Can ...

Yesterday, gaming giant Electronic Arts acquired Swedish gaming company ESN, which creates web- and cloud-based services for game developers. It's further proof that EA is bolstering its cloud-gaming services to keep up with its audience, which is now as used to web and mobile social games as it is traditional video games, such as EA's Fifa or Madden NFL.

Cloud gaming poses a potentially significant threat to gaming industry stalwarts because it makes the need to buy hard copies of video games obsolete. When you're streaming and playing from the cloud, you don't need to wait months or years on a lead time for the newest version of a game--it's simply expected that as developers make improvements, you'll see those updates reflected in your games much more quickly, the way frequent app updates work on your smartphone. That's generally great news for gamers as, in theory, it means new games will be the latest and greatest versions of all the time.

But it's not great news for EA-type games publishers and console makers. Naturally, EA's not alone in this game of catch-up. Sony is another big player making bets on cloud gaming. In July, Sony acquired streaming video-game maker Gaikai for $380 million to bring its gaming services to the cloud, where it's free to stream to any device, not just Sony-produced ones such as the PlayStation.

A Global Industry Analysts report projects the cloud gaming market will hit $2 billion by 2018. That may seem paltry compared to the $78.5 billion the global video game market is projected to make in revenue this year, but $2 billion is more significant when you compare it to the much tamer $8.5 billion of total revenue that's coming from mobile games on smartphones and tablets.

ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250

We recently caught first sight of the ZTE Engage at a press event in New York, but while Cricket was more than happy to let us play with its latest smartphone, the carrier stopped short of providing us with its pricing or arrival date. All of that changed this afternoon, as we now know that the ZTE Engage will become available on October 2nd with a no-contract price of $250. As a quick refresher, the handset will feature a near-stock Android 4.0 environment and a Snapdragon S2 SoC with a CPU that's clocked at 1.4GHz. Other relevant specs include a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT-LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera with a VGA front-facing counterpart and a 1,900mAh battery. For complete details, you'll find the full PR right after the break.

Milan teams not as strong as before: Inter president

Rome, Sep 25

Inter Milan club president Massimo Moratti admitted that his side and their cross-city rivals AC Milan are not as strong as before.

"Milan have sold some important players, while we are gradually introducing youngsters," Moratti was quoted as saying by football-italia.net Monday, reports Xinhua.

"Neither Milan nor ourselves have a super squad anymore, though we still hope that results arrive. Unfortunately, we can no longer allow ourselves to sign a player who costs 20 million euros or more."

The Nerazzurri were being backed by the majority of football tips to collect a comfortable win against Siena at the weekend, but they were stunned 0-2 at San Siro.

"We should have won, but it is hard to face teams like Siena who just play to defend. Now we need to win in Verona against Chievo Wednesday.

"It's not very pleasing to live through defeats, let's hope that the victories will provide faith and motivation to the team," he added.

Home Staging - about Home Improvement

Posted on September 26, 2012

Having a sound and profitable investment in real estate means to utilize all the necessary resources to add more value to your property. Even if you have mastered the mechanics of advertising and promoting your home, if you have not done the right preparation to improve its condition and quality, then you are bound to a failing venture. Home staging is one important component you need to deal with and seriously consider if you want to have a productive home selling adventure.

Why do you need home staging?

You have most probably cleaned your house, check the details for repairs and fixtures and even done the necessary home renovation for more value booster. However, you might wonder if all your efforts are enough to ensure that your property will be bought as soon as possible. Amidst the tough competition in the vast real estate market, your chances are not that much. This is where home staging comes in, with all the guarantee and assurance it has to offer to potential and effective home selling.

Staging your house means not just cleaning the surroundings and repairing what has to be fixed. It does more in enhancing your property and creating the right mood for higher chances of selling. Home staging improves the quality of your house through style, ambience, and overall impact on potential home buyers. The ultimate goal of home staging is to make buyers realize that this is exactly the property they are looking for and they must have it as soon as they possibly can.

How much does it cost?

Most home owners opted for do-it-yourself alternatives for staging their homes, which is in one point a good way of making use of their creative juices and passion for home improvement. However, home staging is an art that needs intensive training and substantial background to perfect. Therefore, it is still advisable to seek help from professional home stagers who knows exactly what to do and are experts in their field. Prices depend mainly on the location of the property and the demand for home staging professionals in your locale. In fact, some real estate agents are themselves capable of home staging to make sure that the house they are helping to sell will be successfully marketed and sold in no time at all.

What to do in staging your house?

Here are some of the examples of the things that are usually done during the process of staging your house in preparation for selling.

  • Arranging your furniture and using accents to emphasize their value and effects is very important. You may use accessories such as drape window coverings with ribbons, bookshelves and fireplace mantels and even large bowls to decorate on top of your center table to add more color and attraction.
  • Staging your backyard is also possible by means of accentuating your decks and patios with flowers and potted plants. You may also add patio and picnic tables for more exciting effects.

Home staging offers more than just the possibility of selling your house effectively and quickly. It adds contentment and satisfaction knowing that you are investing on something worthwhile and with promising results.

Hubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever captured

That picture above is the deepest and most detailed view of the universe ever captured. It's called XDF, or eXtreme Deep Field, and was created using Hubble Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. It combines ten years of NASA Hubble Space photographs of a single sky sample into one full-color historic view of the galaxies. Hubble pointed at this patch of the constellation Fornax for fifty days, with an exposure time of 2 million seconds. A dazzling trip back in time, the image reveals almost 5,500 galaxies that include Andromeda, spirals similar to the Milky Way, along with remnants of galactic collisions. According to NASA, the XDF reveals galaxies that go as far back as 13.2 billion years.

There's a video after the break describing how the shot was assembled; those interested in learning even more can participate in a Google+ webinar with the XDF team this Thursday, September 27th. Here's hoping that when NASA finally gets the James Webb Space Telescope going, we'll have an even deeper view into our galactic past.
