NTSB: Large planes should have camera systems to prevent ground ...

The National ?Transportation Safety Board recommended today that large jets should be equipped with cameras or other anti-collision aids to avoid ground accidents.

The NTSB, an independent federal agency, made the recommendation to the FAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency, which regulates airplane manufacturers in Europe.

The NTSB?s letter cites three recent ground collisions in Boston, Chicago and New York. In the most recent accident, at Chicago O?Hare, a Boeing 737 operated by EVA Air clipped the rudder and vertical stabilizer of a regional jet operated by American Eagle. The NTSB?s preliminary report says the American Eagle?s tail section was protruding into a taxiway being used by the EVA Air jet.

In its letter to the FAA, the NTSB says it is difficult for pilots of large airplanes to judge wingtip clearance and path from the cockpit window:

On large airplanes (such as the Boeing 747, 757, 767, and 777; the Airbus A380; and the McDonnell Douglas MD-10 and MD-11), the pilot cannot see the airplane?s wingtips from the cockpit unless the pilot opens the cockpit window and extends his or her head out of the window, which is often impractical. Thus, determining the wingtip clearance and path on large airplanes is difficult and reliant mainly on the pilot?s judgment.

The NTSB recommends that new, large airplanes equipped with anti-collision aids, such as camera systems. Airlines should add systems to their existing fleets of Boeing 747, 757, 767, and 777; Airbus A380s; and McDonnell Douglas MD-10s and MD-11s.
