Greenwich is famous for its luxurious elegant seaside living, upscale shopping and varied recreational activities on the scenic Long Island Sound. Greenwich is New England gateway community bordering New York?s Westchester County. It is a prime location for convenient travel by highway or rail to major metropolitan centers making it one of Connecticut?s best communities for your family and home.

Known for its elegant living, the rambling estates and vast manors of historic Cos Cob, Old Greenwich and Riverside dot the coastline?s inlets. The rolling hills and manicured properties of Banksville and Round Hill offer truly exceptional homes in a range of styles and sizes from large country houses to streamlined contemporaries and condominiums. Smaller cottages and tasteful condos grace the coastline.

Microsoft Crowned Top U.S. Spammer -- Again

Microsoft has topped a list of biggest U.S. spammers for five out of the past 15 months, and for some of those months it ranked No. 1 in the world, according to a University of Texas study to flag the worst offenders in an effort to get them to improve their security.

Based on results culled from spam block lists, researchers found that Microsoft IP addresses were responsible for a big enough volume of spam to top their SpamRankings.net list for the U.S. in April and May 2011, and in March, April and June of this year, which is the latest ranking, says John S. Quarterman, a senior researcher with the project at the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin. (See also When Viagra Comments on Your Blog and Other Spam Red Flags."

NEWS: Cybercriminals no longer control the third largest spam botnet, researchers say

BLACK HAT: Cyber-espionage operations vast yet highly focused, researcher claims

The project analyzes raw data about where spam traffic comes from and tracks down what organization owns the offending IP addresses. The raw data is gathered by groups outside UT, and the Microsoft rankings are based on those compiled by Passive Spam Block List.

While Microsoft didn't respond to requests for comment over the past week, Quarterman says one factor in the high volume of Microsoft spam may be that part of it is MSN, the Microsoft portal that includes its ISP. "Its purpose is to let people have access to the Internet, and that means people have their own computers, which may have all sorts of security problems," he says.

Outbound spam from an organization indicates a security problem, Quarterman says, sometimes because machines have been compromised by botnets and sometimes because users have fallen to phishing ploys. Either way, it means security should be tightened up.

The goals of the research project are to reduce spam and improve organizations' security by drawing attention to their rankings in the hopes that public scrutiny and pressure from customers and peers will encourage them to do something about it.

It worked for at least one medical center in California, according to the center's CIO who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The CIO of the center contacted the CSO after it was ranked at the top of the top medical-profession spammers. "The CIO told me, 'Get us off this list,'" the CSO says.

It turns out that certain end users had fallen for phishing emails purporting to come from the medical center's IT staff. The email said they had exceeded their email storage limits and should click on a link to get it increased. The link triggered a popup window that asked for their user names and passwords. Some users complied, and the credentials were used to get the attackers into the mail server via Outlook Web Access. Once there, they used the server to send spam, the CSO says. Educating end users about how to recognize phishing attempts brought down outbound spam from tens of thousands per day at its peak to less than 100 per day, the CSO says.

SpamRankings.net is running experiments with its rankings, says Andrew Whinston, a professor at the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce at the UT business school. For example, it is ranking the biggest spammers in certain countries and publishing the list, but ranking them in other countries but keeping the list private. The experiment is meant to see whether the entities ranked publicly drop off the list faster than those for which there is no public ranking, Whinston says.

The lists could be used for marketing purposes, Quarterman says. A business could note that its rival, for example, appeared repeatedly on the list and use that as a competitive advantage. Or a business that appeared on the list could say it responded quickly and has fallen off the list.

Depending on the results, the research could indicate that legal requirements to publicly post data security stats about businesses could drive them to be more secure, Whinston says. "Then we'd know how to present that information to the public" to have the greatest beneficial impact, he says.

"We're not trying to solve the spam issue," he says. "We're trying to deal with the broader issue of whether companies should publicly report security issues."

What happened to Michael Phelps? Ryan Lochte blitzes everyone in 400 IM. (+video)

Ryan Lochte delivered an emphatic performance in winning the 400 IM, but Michael Phelps shockingly finished out of the medals, raising questions about what went wrong.?

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / July 28, 2012

USA's Ryan Lochte competes in the men's 400-meter individual medley at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London Saturday.

David J. Phillip/AP

Frankly, the race was over after the first 100 meters. The only suspense was whether Michael Phelps would win a medal at all.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

He didn't. In fact, he didn't come all that close. And now we must wait until Monday ? for the heats of the 200-meter butterfly ? to begin to answer the question no one was asking before these Games began.

What happened to Michael Phelps?

From start to finish, the 400-meter individual medley was Lochte's race. He could have swum with the gold medal already around his neck, and he still would have finished first. By a lot. Billed as a showdown between two of the greatest swimmers ever, Lochte swam against only invisible competition ? the golden world-record line on TV that just beat him to the finish.

Slightly ahead of the field after 100 meters of freestyle, Lochte needed rearview mirrors to see it after the backstroke and breaststroke. By the time he finished, the swimmer in second place was three body-lengths behind.?

And that swimmer was not Phelps. It was Brazilian Thiago Pereira, who summed up the evening nicely in stating, "I didn't expect this."?

Nor was Phelps the next one to touch the wall. That was Japanese Kosuke Hagino, a 17-year-old who, last year, finished third in the world junior championships.?

Then came Phelps, 0.34 seconds later.?

Of all the sportsmen who walk this earth, Phelps is perhaps most deserving of a mulligan and a measure of patience from fans. Then again, the man laboring in Lane 8 didn't look remotely like Michael Phelps.

Brazilian Luca Martin got a good look from Lane 7 next door, and he didn't think it looked like Phelps, either.

"It's so strange to see Phelps like that," he said.

Phelps didn't disagree. "I was trying to find a gear that I couldn't find," he said. "I have swum better races, and I have been better prepared. It was a very frustrating finish."

It is that second-to-last sentence that must raise some doubts about Phelps's assumed victory lap in London. "Better prepared" could have been engraved into each of his 14 gold medals. Yes, Phelps has uncommon physical gifts, but his greatest gift is his mental strength ? ? and that is founded upon his certainty that his rigorous training meant he never would have to utter, "I have been better prepared."

In May, when Phelps was still trying to prove that he could come back from several indifferent years of training, he told a media summit: "Hopefully, I didn't get too far behind that I can't make up the difference."

He appeared to dispel those doubts at Olympic trials, when he beat Lochte in three of four races ? and while he lost to Lochte in the 400 IM then, too, he raced it in 4:07.89. Had he matched that Saturday, he would have taken silver by nearly a second.?

So what happened?

Before the Games began, Phelps said how he was going to enjoy these Games. "I'm having fun," he said in a news conference. "It's a question of: How many toppings do I want on my sundae?"

Perhaps Phelps, the ultimate grinder, can't turn into a cherries-on-top sort of swimmer overnight.?

Before the Games began, Phelps said he was going to have to manage his emotions in this, his last meet. "There are going to be the last competitive moments in my career," he added. "It's big."

Perhaps he's letting those emotions get the better of him.?

Or perhaps he just had a bad day at the pool.

To be honest, we didn't know what a bad day at the Olympic pool looked like for Phelps before now. There had never been any.?

So now we're left to wait, and wonder. Did that man in Lane 8 really kidnap Michael Phelps, or is Superman simply waiting in the phone booth?

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy ? Here is how it works

If you are planning on filing for bankruptcy in the near future then chances are good that you will be filing for, or forced to file, under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If you own a business that is filing for Chapter 7 this means that your company will have a Trustee appointed by the court and operations will cease.

The trustee will sell the business assets and use the money to pay off the company?s debts. Sometimes this means that a lot of people will lose their jobs, but not always. At times the company can be left partially intact and continue running business as normal but with someone else running things.

But Chapter 7 bankruptcy is also available to be filed by individuals, not just businesses. When an individual files for Chapter 7 there will be a list of property made that can be used to pay off the debt and a list of property that is exempt from being sold. Some debts may not be eligible to be handled under a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, like real estate mortgages, and will be kept intact.

After the bankruptcy is filed the trustee will sell all non-exempt property and all the proceeds will be used to pay back creditors. Although the bankruptcy will manage to resolve most of your unsecured debts there are certain debts that. This list of remaining debts will include things like child support, tax debt, student loans, and any fine or restitution you may have been assigned in criminal courts.

While filing bankruptcy does give you a chance to start over again and rebuild your financial history, there are also consequences you need to consider. One of the consequences is that most of your valuable possessions will have been sold, so you will have to save up and buy replacements. This process may be extremely difficult for you to swallow, but will open up opportunities for better money management in the future.

The biggest consequence is that it will reflect the bankruptcy on your credit report for a full 10 years. This means that you may not be able to get any other loans or new credit, but this could also happen with a lot of debt so it might be worth the hassle for awhile to start over.

There are a lot of things that you need to consider before filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If you are being forced to file then you might have the option of avoiding this for the reason that it might be abusive to force you to file under Chapter 7. Maybe a Chapter 13 would work better for your financial situation. Make sure that you understand what the differences are and make the decision that is right for you.

Before taking out a second mortgage, it is important to develop a reasonable budget budget with reasonable expectations. Too many Americans let debt get them down. Each year consumer debt hits record highs. Many times people run across obstacles as the result of sickness or econmic hardships from loosing your job. Sometimes, careless spending can occur, so it is important to recognize it and make a change for the better. Homeowners there are viable options for consolidating credit cards without having to take the bankruptcy.

The first step towards overcoming your financial obstacles is to do a realistic assessment of how much money you are bringing in, and and how much money have going out for expenses. Start by listing your income and then list you debts, and the monthly payments for each bill. This is a formula for calculating your debt to income ratio.

Don?t forget to include your housing expenses, those that are the same each month, such as your existing mortgage payment, home equity loan payment, lease payments for automobiles, and everyone?s favorite, insurance payments. If you need help with this credit assessment, ask your loan officer to see what debt consolidation loan options you qualify for. A good loan officer can assist you in analyzing your debt ratio, and should be able to present some solutions to you within 24 hours.

Many times these second mortgages can reduce years of interest because these loans allow you to refinance revolving credit into a fixed rate mortgage. If you are in a position to save some money, and lower your monthly payments then consider a home equity loans to 125% and enjoy the money that goes into your bank account.

Pets and More Pets ? Raw Dog Food Helps Dogs in Many Ways

As pet owners think of their dog?s health, they want the very best for them. They make sure to take their dog to the vet for regular checkups and give them plenty of room for exercise. When it comes to their diet, they do a lot of research. After they have done their research, many begin to introduce their dog to a raw dog food diet.

A raw dog food diet is a diet that is filled with uncooked, unprocessed foods. This diet is filled with raw meat, bones, organ meats and fruits and veggies. These foods can be bought and mixed at home or pet owners can purchase them already made.

People have many different reasons for switching their dog over to a raw dog food diet. Many of these pet owners have taken the time to research different diets for their pets and found this to be the best. Others have watched their dog suffer medical issues and have decided to switch. Regardless of why, all these pet owners see great benefits.

There are many different benefits that pet owners have reported after starting the raw dog food diet. The physical differences they see in their dogs often leave them breathless. The dog?s coats get thicker and have more of a glossy shine than they had before. There have been many reports of a dog with skin problems no longer having those problems after they started the diet.

Dogs also see to become more energetic after they begin the raw dog food diet. When pet owners see the increase in energy, they talk to their vet about the reason for the change. As their vet explains, they understand that the food is providing more nutrients for their body. They understand that their bodies don?t have to work so hard to process the food.

The longer pet owners feed their dogs raw dog food, they see more differences. They begin to notice that their dogs no longer have awful breath. Many vets thank the chewing that is required in this diet for that. They also notice their dog has fewer feces. That is because more of the food is being used for the dog?s benefits and not indigestible.

All dog owners don?t believe in the benefits of the raw dog food diet. There are many that believe that it isn?t healthy to feed a dog raw food. Most of this belief comes from their fear that this diet isn?t nutritionally balanced and dogs will suffer growth problems.

Raw dog food isn?t something that is a new concept. There are many people that believe their dogs have great benefits because of this diet. Others think that it?s dangerous to feed a dog. The decision should be made with the dog in mind.

I enjoy blogging about lots of dog-related topics. Click here for more information.

Citizen researchers help unlock European genetic heritage

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? A University of Sheffield academic is helping a team of citizen scientists to carry out crucial research into European genetic heritage.

Citizen Scientists are not required to have a scientific background or training, but instead they possess a passion for the subject and are increasingly being empowered by the scientific community to get involved in research.

Dr Andy Grierson, from the University of Sheffield's Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), has helped a team of citizen scientists from Europe and North America to identify vital new clues to tell the story of Europe's genetic history.

Dr Grierson explained: "Understanding European history since man first arrived on the continent is a huge challenge for archaeologists and historians.

"One way that scientists can help is by studying the genetics of European men. All men carry a Y chromosome that they inherit from their father, which has been passed down the generations from father to son for thousands of years. So most men in Europe will share common ancestry at some point in the past, and we are able to investigate this shared ancestry using genetic studies of the Y chromosome.

"However, up until recently, there have not been many genetic clues on the Y chromosome to allow scientists to be certain about identifying different populations."

The team has addressed this problem by downloading human genome data obtained by the 1000 Genomes Project from the Sanger Centre in Cambridge. Then, working on their home computers, they managed to extract 200 novel genetic variants from Y chromosomes of the most numerous group of western European men.

By determining the patterns of these markers in each of the 1000 Genomes Project samples, the team was able to draw up a new family tree for the majority of men in Western Europe.

The group hopes that this resource will allow a much more detailed analysis of migration and expansion of populations in Europe. For example, some of the new genetic markers may help to study the origins and movements of different historical and cultural groups such as the Celts.

Dr Grierson added: "This community-led approach to genetic research could easily be adopted by other research areas. In particular, the 1000 Genomes Project has made the whole genome sequence of more than 2,000 individuals freely available for research purposes. These sequences potentially contain new information that will give important insight in diverse disciplines such as clinical medicine and evolutionary biology.

"One problem is that the amount of data analysis involved is huge, so working in partnership with citizen scientists allows us to move forward far more rapidly. There are thousands of science graduates, who for one reason or another have pursued non-scientific careers. Getting involved in citizen science projects is one way that these people can re-engage with research. Likewise many people with careers in IT and computing already have the sorts of skills required for analysing whole genome sequences in projects like ours."

Richard Rocca from Saddle Brook in New Jersey, USA, a community scientist involved in the project, said: "By searching through vital records such as birth certificates, many of us can trace our ancestry back several generations. The task is very time consuming, especially for those, like me, whose ancestors left Europe many generations ago. As gratifying as the results may be, once the paper trail ends, we are left to wonder about our deep ancestry. By working together, we were able to add many levels of detail to the genetic tree. I have no doubt that this new information will help some of us trace our individual ancestries back into pre-history."

Greg Magoon, from Manchester in Connecticut, USA, another community scientist involved in the project said, "It's a very exciting time for this field. The development and use of new genome sequencing technologies over the last few years along with the public availability of data obtained with these technologies, particularly from initiatives like the 1000 Genomes Project, are enabling us to make rapid progress in our understanding of historical human migrations and paternal lineages. We've tried to show how such progress can be facilitated by an engaged community of individuals, with varied and complementary skills, connected via the Internet."

Your feet may soon be your password

13 hrs.

Shoes outfitted with high-tech soles that can confirm a person?s identity in just a few steps may soon serve as our keycards and?computer passwords, and could?even let doctors know when we show signs of dementia.

They work by combing physical and behavioral biometrics ? measurements of a foot?s shape and person?s gait, for example.

Both the shape of our feet and how we walk are unique, explained Todd Gray, chairman and president of Autonomous ID.?

An algorithm fuses this information to create an anonymous ID that is stored on a tiny chip in the insole.

?Not even the user knows what it is,? he told me.

This ID is used, for example, to unlock your door you are within a few feet of it.?

?There is nothing to remember, nothing to swipe, nothing to touch, no backend system to incorporate the authenticity of the biometric,? he said.

Gray said he started working on the concept in 2007 when Iraqi insurgents dressed in U.S. uniforms walked onto a base and abducted U.S. soldiers.

The concept is considered more secure and private than, say, using a fingerprint or eye scan to gain entry to a high security area.

?If your thumb is the only access into a door, they are going to cut it off,? Gray said. ?This is war.?

Autonomous ID partnered this July with Carnegie Mellon University?s Pedo-Biometrics Research and Identity Automation Lab to authenticate and fine tune the technology.

The lab is to receive $1.5 million per year in funding for the venture.

The team will also probe the potential to use the technology as a way to detect early warning signs of diseases such as Parkinson?s and dementia, which can affect how we walk.

Changes in gait, which the insole would notice, could be monitored for a few weeks, explained Mario Savvides, the lab?s director.

?We haven?t started working on this yet, but once we do, it is going to open up a whole new world of possibility,? he told me.

The 2012 ESPY Awards - ArrivalsGetty Images

The ongoing rash of player arrests has caused some to argue that the situation demonstrates the importance of Commissioner Roger Goodell?s broad powers over player conduct.

Others (or, at a minimum, I) think that there?s no link between the arrests and the procedures for imposing discipline.? And that, regardless of the procedures, the current system clearly isn?t working.? And that to the extent players don?t believe a fair system is in place for processing player discipline, it will be difficult if not impossible to get players to buy in completely to the league?s overall efforts to monitor and punish player behavior away from the field.

Bills union representative George Wilson recently touched on that last point, explaining to Zig Fracassi and Gil Brandt of SiriusXM NFL Radio (via Tim Graham of the Buffalo News) that players ?don?t figure it?s a just system when you?re appealing to the same judge who issued out the discipline.?

?How many judges do you know are going to overturn a ruling that they made?? Wilson said.? ?They?re not going to do that.? It makes them look incompetent.?

Wilson then made the NFLPA look incompetent by suggesting that he was led to believe when voting for the new CBA that real changes to Goodell?s judge/jury/executioner powers would be made.

?The information I received and the information I had when I placed my vote was that on player discipline, a mediator will be brought in on anything over a $50,000 fine,? Wilson said.? ?That was my understanding and why I voted in favor of the CBA because I felt like anything over $50,000 that the Players? Association along with a mediator would be brought in to hash out and resolve the matter.

?Whereas now, it seems as if we?re still under the same system that?s been in place since Commissioner Goodell has taken over as commissioner.?

If that happened, that?s a real problem.? But it wasn?t a universal misunderstanding.? Steelers representaive Ryan Clark definitely wasn?t under that impression.? And his team unanimously voted against the new labor deal last year due in large part of Goodell?s powers.

All that said, Goodell?s powers aren?t unlimited.? Punishment for on-field violations continues to be reviewed by Art Shell or Ted Cottrell, who have been jointly appointed and who are jointly compensated by the NFL and the NFLPA.? As to off-field issues, including conduct detrimental to the game, personal-conduct policy violations, substance-abuse policy violations, and steroids/banned substances issues, Goodell has full power.

And Goodell (or one of his designees) will from time to time reverse an initial decision.? It happened last year, after Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was fined for using a cell phone to call his wife after leaving a game with ?concussion-like symptoms.?? It has happened many times with drug and steroids appeals that remaining fully confidential while pending.? It likely will happen again.

But it shouldn?t have to happen.? Goodell shouldn?t have full power over these issues.? If he?d be willing to surrender that control to a reliable and fair third party, the players could be more inclined to embrace the league?s ongoing efforts to deal with the small percentage of players who are making all of them look bad.

Colorado mourns victims of 'diabolical' theater gunman

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

A woman stands during a morning Mass remembering the victims of the movie theater shootings, at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora, Colo., on Sunday.

By Miranda Leitsinger and James Eng, NBC News

Updated at 4:09 p.m. ET: In community churches, at impromptu memorials and at a public vigil, residents of Aurora, Colo., gathered Sunday to mourn the victims of a movie theater mass-shooting that the governor said was the work of a ?diabolical, demonic? individual.

As worshippers pondered how the massacre could have happened, investigators said they don?t know what prompted a gunman police identified as a graduate-school dropout to open fire during a packed midnight premiere of the latest ?Batman? film, ?The Dark Knight Rises.? The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

President Barack Obama was traveling to Colorado on Sunday to meet privately with families of the victims.

The message from Aurora was clear: On the online homepage of the Aurora Sentinel, the hometown paper, a headline blared: "Welcome back to Aurora, Mr. President. We?re hurting, and we need your help. The whole country does."

A public vigil was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in front of Aurora City Hall, organized by civic, community and religious leaders.

"Our culture needs to change,'' Fr. Mauricio Bermudez told a packed Mass at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora, Reuters reported. "What kind of people are we becoming? Today, we must change. Today is the day.''

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI said he was??deeply shocked? by the ?senseless violence? in the?Colorado movie theater shootings. In his traditional Sunday blessing, Benedict said he shared the distress of the families and friends of the victims. He said he was praying for all ?as a pledge of consolation and strength? for God.

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

As many as 12 people were killed and 50 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie.

The suspect, identified as James Eagan Holmes, was reportedly jailed in solitary confinement, awaiting his first court appearance on Monday. Police have said Holmes planned the massacre with "calculation and deliberation," arming himself with ammunition delivered to his home and school over a period of months.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said ?there is absolutely no question that this guy acted alone.?

After a day of dismantling suspected Colorado gunman James Holmes' booby-trapped apartment, federal law enforcement officials are a step closer in their investigation. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, speaking on NBC?s "Meet the Press" on Sunday, said the motive for the shooting remains a mystery. He described Holmes as "a twisted, really delusional individual" who had not been cooperating with authorities.

"He was diabolical, demonic," Hickenlooper said.

John Hickenlooper visits Meet the Press to update NBC's David Gregory on the most recent information from the tragic shootings in Aurora, Colo.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money.

The university said it's investigating whether Holmes used his position as a graduate student to order materials in the potentially deadly booby traps that police said they found in his apartment.

Twenty-four shooting victims remained hospitalized on Sunday at area hospitals. They included Ashley Moser, whose 6-year-old daughter, Veronica Moser Sullivan, was among those killed. Ashley Moser, who was shot in the back, was told of her daughter?s death on Saturday by her mother, a chaplain and her doctor.

Authorities said Holmes'?apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill whoever entered it. Bomb?technicians neutralized a makeshift?explosive device and by late Saturday afternoon, all hazards had been removed from Holmes' apartment, police said.

Police said Sunday they have finished collecting evidence from the apartment, but it's not known yet when the building's residents would be allowed to return home. "Security of the building is still being maintained because of chemical hazards from the suspect's apartment," Aurora police said in a statement.

The theater where the shooting happened is expected to remain off-limits for up to a week as police continue to process evidence.

Meanwhile, the owner of a Colorado gun range said?Holmes applied to join the club a few weeks before the shooting but never became a member.

Glenn Rotkovich, of the Lead Valley Range in Byers, said Holmes emailed an application to join on June 25.?Rotkovich followed up by calling Holmes' apartment to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week.

Rotkovich got Holmes' answering machine and said "it was bizarre -- guttural, freakish at best," The Associated Press reported.

Rotkovich left two other messages but eventually told his staff to watch for Holmes at the July 1 orientation and not to accept him into the club, according to AP.

A?man who said he was the suspect?s uncle described his nephew as a ?nerd? and ?unassuming kid.? The uncle, also named James Holmes, lives in Carmel, Calif. He told KSBW-TV? he was ?shocked and horrified? by the news. He said his nephew never acted out during his childhood and teen years.

A standing-room-only crow jammed the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Bevery Hills, Calif., on Saturday night for the official Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences screening of ?The Dark Knight Rises." Academy President Tom Sherak asked for a moment of silence for the victims, deadline.com reported.

NBC's Kate Snow and Julmary Zambrano, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this story.

Getting to the Olympics on borrowed shoes

Marathoner Gladys Tejeda, who grew up in a poor family in the mountains of Peru, will be representing her country in London even though just four years ago she had never heard of the Olympics.?

By Sara Miller Llana,?Staff writer / July 22, 2012

Peruvian marathoner Gladys Tejeda trains at high altitudes in her home province of Junin. Four years ago, she had never heard of the Olympics. Now, Ms. Tejeda, who used to herd animals on foot, will represent Peru in London.

Pilar Olivares/Reuters

Gladys Tejeda was a teenager on the starting line of a four-mile race through the chilly Peruvian highlands of her hometown, Jun?n.

She was certainly not thinking about Olympic glory. She didn't even know what the Olympics were. Her family didn't own a TV, and no one amid the mud-brick homes of her town ever talked about them. Besides, she was just concerned with finishing: She didn't own running shoes and only found a pair to borrow right before the race kicked off.

She ended up coming in second that day. But just over a decade later ? and only four years after watching her first Olympic Games ? Ms. Tejeda, age 26, will be representing Peru in the women's marathon during this summer's Olympics in London.

Hers is an improbable journey. She was the best runner in Jun?n as an adolescent, but her aspirations never expanded much beyond local races and the small-town recognition that came with it: a bit of cash, pencils or notebooks for school, some running paraphernalia.

Competing professionally was the last thing on her mind. She was the youngest of nine children (three of whom died at birth). Her parents were subsistence farmers who earned income by taking care of others' animals. The four boys and two girls each started working at age 8, selling fruit or helping in the fields. "We didn't have any money," Tejeda says. "We couldn't afford shoes, or plane tickets to compete abroad, or for me to do nothing but run."

Her parents and siblings knew she was fast. Each day the kids had to shepherd cows to grazing areas, an eight-mile round trip. Tejeda always got the job done the quickest. When her mother needed cooking oil or sugar from the store, she would dispatch her youngest "because she would just run, run, so fast," says her mother, Marcelina Pucuhuaranga.

The Tejeda family got its first TV in 2007, and it was the next year that Tejeda learned about the Olympics, watching the Beijing Games. Her older brother Jorge turned to her, as the family sat transfixed, and asked: "Why don't you run in the Olympics?"

It seemed like a preposterous idea. After all, Tejeda, who was 22 at the time, had never competed in a professional race. The longest she had ever run was 50 minutes. Her father had also died and she had quit running for a year. She only started again with the coaxing of co-workers at the flour factory where she worked.

The next year all the local races paid off. In 2009, the reputation of the "girl from Jun?n" spread, and a Peruvian trainer offered to teach her with a group of other budding marathoners in the state capital, Huancayo, 100 miles away. "I cried and cried," she recalls. "I had never been away from my mother."

Since then, her rise has been breathtaking. She qualified for the Olympics during her first marathon, in Seoul, South Korea, last year, and then captured the bronze medal in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexi-co. The London Games will be only her third marathon.

"She is an example for the rest of Peru," says Sebasti?n Marambio of the Olympian Athletic Association of Peru. "Through hard work and discipline, you can overcome any hardship."

Despite not having formal training until 2009, Tejeda believes her life in Jun?n prepared her well for elite running. Traversing 13,000-foot mountains, in cold air and on icy roads, gave her endurance. And her mother instilled in her an Olympian's discipline. "We always had to be punctual for everything," she says.

This summer, her family will once again be watching the Olympics on TV ? this time a flat-screen that Tejeda recently bought ? except for Jorge and her mother. They will be in London seeing her compete in person, on their first trip outside Peru, as a result of a program sponsored by Procter & Gamble that highlights the sacrifices mothers make raising Olympians.

"I'm a little nervous," says Tejeda. "But mostly just excited."

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll's Comment Offends Gay Community ...

Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll offended gay rights advocates for saying "women who look like" her are not lesbians. (Photo by Jess Liotta and Colin Liotta.)

By Ashley Lopez
Florida Center for Investigative Reporting

In an attempt to defend herself against allegations of an improper relationship with a female staff member, Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll made a bizarre, if not insulting, remark.

Carroll told a reporter:

?The problem is that when you have these accusations that come out, it?s not just one person you?re attacking. It?s an entire family. My husband doesn?t want to hear that. He knows the type of woman I am. I mean, my kids know the type of woman I am. For twenty-nine years ? I?m the one that?s married for twenty-nine years. The accuser is the one that?s been single for a long time. So usually black women that look like me don?t engage in relationships like that.?

An ex-aide of Carroll?s, Carletha Cole, has said that she allegedly walked in on Carroll and a female staffer in a compromising position. Cole was fired and is now in legal hot water for releasing a taped conversation between Carroll and her chief of staff to a newspaper.

Carroll has so far denied the allegations. However, her most recent defense has insulted members of the gay community in Florida.

Nadine Smith of Equality Florida wrote an op-ed for the Grio aimed at Carroll:

I?m not sure what kind of extensive research she has done to?come to that conclusion about black lesbians but perhaps she?ll?publish her findings.

There are many ways for a person to deny accusations, but Lt. Gov. Carroll reached into her anti-gay bag of tricks and ended up hurling a series of stereotypes?about women, lesbians and black people in one fell swoop. The hyper, nervous giggling didn?t help matters.

What did and didn?t happen in her office I?ll leave for others to suss out. ?But let?s get to the coded language Lt. Gov. Carroll was tossing about and why it has?to be challenged.

Saying that women who ?look like? her aren?t lesbians renders a whole lot of lesbians invisible. And that invisibility has consequences.

We live in a culture that continues to ignore the lives, needs and health of black lesbians by rendering us invisible. Carroll reinforces that invisibility by perpetuating the misconception that all lesbian and same-gender loving women look and act the same, virtually erasing the diverse array of Black lesbians. ?And if lesbians look a certain way, Lt. Gov. Carroll, tell us, what do straight black women look like? In putting a fence around what lesbians are supposed to ?look like? she corrals acceptable black heterosexual womens? appearance as well ?

So passed all the ?wink, wink? phrasing and caricatures of what gay people look like, let me answer your question: Yes Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll, you do look like a black lesbian.?You also look like a bisexual black woman and a heterosexual black woman too. And yes, some Black lesbians are gym coaches and some are models or elected leaders. Some are homeless and some anchor the news. Some are janitors and soldiers and fashion designers or pastors or chemical engineers. We come in all shapes and sizes and political and religious persuasions. Many of us look a lot like you.

The Florida Democratic Party has also jumped in. According to the Huffington Post:

Amid uproar over her comment ?black women that look like me don?t engage in [lesbian relationships],? Florida?s Democratic Party has demanded an apology from Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll.

?Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll has embarrassed our state with her public comments insulting the gay and lesbian community,? wrote party chairman Rod Smith. ?Her generalities about what Black lesbians ?look like? were ignorant, irrelevant and unnecessarily hostile.?

While it is possible that the media and/or civil rights groups are misconstruing her words, Carroll has yet to clarify what she meant when she said ?women who look like me.? The?Sarasota Herald-Tribune?reported:

The lieutenant governor?s office has not offered any clarification of those remarks, while Carroll continues to maintain that she has been falsely accused. Supportive emails from her supporters are pouring into her office, with Carroll personally thanking many of them.

?Art thanks for your support and you are correct this is a lie and a malicious attack against me,? Carroll told one of her supporters in an email Monday.

Gov. Rick Scott?s office has also denied the allegations against Carroll, calling them absurd.
