Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community - Final ...

Final Fantasy VII PC remake

Technically, this should be called a re-re-release, considering Square Enix?s most heralded PS1 RPG has already been re-released on the PC back in the 90s. This time, instead of just being a port of the PS1 game like the 90s PC version was, the newest FF7 is getting an injection of modern gaming elements in order to spruce up it?s second coming to the PC, to be released in the near future.

It?s no secret that a true re-release of the now 14 year old game, complete with current gen HD graphics and?playability, has been on the wish list of countless gamers since Square-Enix made a teaser trailer featuring the game as if it were redone for the Playstation 3 a few years ago at E3.

Maybe they finally realized that they opened Pandora?s box, and that fans will not rest until they see their beloved game re-released in all it?s modern day glory. So, did Square-Enix deliver?

No, not hardly. Fans are indeed getting their re-release, yes, but from the general fan?consensus?going ?around, it?s not even close to what they were hoping for. Sounds fair enough, as fans were hoping for that complete overhaul, but instead, they got a tweaked version of the exact same Playstation 1 game they?ve been enjoying for almost a decade and a half. You get no graphical changes whatsoever, but there are some neat features

The first modern change that the remake is offering gamers a cloud save feature. Yes, I giggled too. Cloud saves are a nice touch for sure, but they certainly aren?t necessary.

The other modern addition to this PS1 classic that may actually pique the interest of gamers, is the addition of achievements. Trophies, achievements, or whatever you desire to call them, are a core element to the modern gaming, and what many people claim is the major rift?separating?the playability of retro games compared to modern ones.

Square-Enix has not revealed what any of these achievements will be, but if there is a bonafide reason to purchase this game, it will more than likely be this. Achievements will give retro gamers who have been playing this game for years a legitimate means to measure their success in this timeless classic, and more modern gamers who fancy a trophy or two may find more reason to give the game a try.

Final Fantasy VII PC Achievement

The PC remake will also feature a version of the game that will essentially make the game easier for newcomers by granting players increased HP, MP, and Gil (currency).

The powers-that-be at Square Enix continue to deny the possibility of a full HD remake of the game, so considering the game has already been released for download to the PS3 and PSP, and now with the PC remake, the chances for yet another?iteration?of FF7 seem more bleak than ever.

Granted, crazier things have happened in the world of video games, but for now at least, this is all FF7 fans are going to get.
