Keeping the canines cool

MILWAUKEE - It's the dog days of summer, and for the dogs themselves, the summer heat can take its toll.? "Miserable, miserable, it's just too hot for them," dog walker Kate Hartlund tells TODAY'S TMJ4'S Jesse Ritka.

Protecting pets from the sun and baking temperatures is the number one priority for Wisconsin Pet Care LLC's Kate Hartlund.? "We all want to spend as much time with our dogs as possible, but especially in this heat, it's super stressful for them and it's just not a good idea."

Many of Kate's pet care appointments are during the middle of the day, which can be the most dangerous.? So just like us, water and shade are crucial in this heat, "Fresh water, fresh water is always key," Hartlund says.

But Kate also has creative ways to keep her customer's animals cool, turning kiddie pools into puppy pools.? "Another thing we've learned works well is if you freeze towels or if you get towels wet and cool and put them in a cooler with some ice packs.? You can lay that over your dogs, make sure there's lots of fans going, circulation, things like that."? She says you can freeze treats, toys and bandannas to help give the dogs a welcome chill in this heat.

Hartlund recommends limiting time outdoors for the panting pooches and be careful when taking the dog for a walk.? "Asphalt heats up very quickly, so you don't want to let your dog walk on asphalt, you have to remember that dogs are closer to the ground, so they get hotter a lot faster than we do," Hartlund warns.

Kate also says that dogs can get sunburn too, especially dogs with short or light colored fur.? She advises applying a spray-on sunscreen will help protect them.
