Nov. 13, 2012

Dive Summary:

  • Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee's efforts to increase student graduation rates and raise billions of dollars for the school through fundraising and public-private partnerships have earned him a 3% pay raise (equal to the overall percentage given to faculty and staff this year) worth $25,036 and a $333,812 bonus from the school's trustees.
  • Gee, whose base salary is now $859,566, has topped The Chronicle of Higher Education's executive pay survey of public-college presidents since his 2007 return to OSU, and with deferred compensation and retirement benefits taken into account, his total compensation this year tops $2.1 million.
  • Gee's bonuses are paid using a donor-funded account instead of funds from tuition and fees or the state, and university spokesman Shelley Hoffman says that Gee will return some of his compensation for student scholarships as he has in the past.
