We will be visiting the headquarters of two very different and interesting energy-related operations in Milwaukee:

Growing Power
Our first visit will be at Growing Power?s prototype Community Food Center at 5500 W. Silver Spring Drive in Milwaukee.? At this location under the leadership of CEO Will Allen, Growing Power has developed a model for sustainable urban agriculture that includes greenhouses, aquaponic technologies (indoor fish farm!), beehives, a rainwater catchment system and an anaerobic digester that produces energy for the farm using organic waste material as an input.? This facility serves as a learning center and model for promoting sustainable and local urban agriculture systems nationwide.

The Glendale, WI corporate campus was awarded LEED Platinum status in 2010 by the U.S. Green Building Council, the highest classification possible.? During the tour we?ll learn about the many sustainability and energy-efficiency measures taken in the construction and operation of the corporate facilities.? This PDF gives an overview of the systems put in place at JCI that save energy, water and other resources and create a comfortable work environment for JCI?s employees.

Johnson Controls? Milwaukee headquarters is home to development laboratories for a variety of energy-related technologies that form the core of this global industrial leader?s business efforts.? JCI is a leader in automotive battery technologies, including conventional lead-acid batteries, as well as advanced Li-ion and other battery types for the high-performance electric and hybrid-electric vehicles of the future.? Another major technology area under development at JCI is building energy efficiency and facilities management technologies and services.
